From What's on Stage: "More names to add to the mix of casting possibilities for the 2006 West End revival of Evita (See The Goss, 16 Aug 2005). The Daily Mail reports that, over the coming weeks, several top contenders will be having private auditions with composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, whose Really Useful Group is also producing the musical. They include Idina Menzel, star of Broadway’s Rent and Wicked, who’s vying for the title part of Eva Peron, the Argentine actress who charmed and scratched her way up to share the power and the bed of her country's leader General Juan Peron".
Yes we DID need a thread on this, because we are bieng notified about new news.

Don’t Scream for Me, Dear Idina [Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina] (Evita)
IDINA It will be hard to understand Why I do what I do I must yell and scream To pump up my show
But you must believe me I do it for you, For my teeny-boppers, It is how I learned And that’s all For singing is all I have left
You have to accept How I sing and act For my popularity is high I’m a wanted diva So take me as I am
Be the life of the party I’m with my husband in every show This makes every woman jealous That I have him It’s me: A white Jew from NY
CHORUS Don’t scream for me, dear Idina The truth is I can hear you fine All the way in the back In the balcony I paid so much money Don’t scream for me, honey
IDINA Don’t worry now For I am here To save the show with my voice It needs no music accompaniment
But that’s OK now Sometimes I confuse Belting with screaming But I’m a star So watch me As I defy the rest of the cast
CHORUS Don’t scream for me, dear Idina...
IDINA So, I’ll scream for you, my audience You deserve to hear me kick ass It’s what I’ll give you For paying money To see me perform And not the real show
And when I leave You’ll pay 1 thousand bucks then To see me off…
If I’m injured Don’t be mad Just buy the recording And you can hear me scream
Apparently she can't pull off an entire concert on pitch.
I listened to her Zipper Theatre Concert, and um, let's just say she was off-pitch more than she was on. And this was her solo CONCERT. I would have demanded my money back.
Also, regardless of a performer's abilities, some people are just not castable in certain things.
Please, great Idina Will you bless a Wicked fan? For I love you Tell Patti you're doing your best I liked you so much when you played The Witch of the West
Please, sweet Idina Will you sing Evita grand? For I love you Tell Maddie you're doing your best Sing - don't scream - the role And your detractors will be impressed
Santa, Santa Idina Screamer of all of the show tunes You yell, but how we love you There is no one above you You ain't no baloney You won a Tony
Spoken: Why try to have a solo career when you can become a saint?

I like both Idina and Madonna, though I understand some of the reasons why they have their detractors.
At this point, though, I think Idina would be be a much better choice for the role. As has pointed out, Madonna is a little long in the tooth for the role.
In all honesty, either choice is probably a bad one. I nominate Mindy Cohn! It's time for a comeback!
Perhaps they could combine their skills and talents to become one entity - Midina!
Idonna?

This is an honest question, as I'm not all that familiar with Evita...Why exactly is she "not castable"?
Love4Cheno, if you think she was off pitch more than she was on at that concert you need your ears checked. Or, you can stop judging her vocal abilities of some old....not professional recording. Trust me, no one--NO ONE--there wanted his or her money back.
There are PLENTY of people on this board who voiced their "displeasure" at her singing. It was horrible. I played it for several friends who cringed more than once.
I'm not saying she can't sing. She can. She just did a horrible job that night. And her overall sound is just not my thing. When I saw her in Wicked, though, she was right on.
As far as castable, I just don't see her as the First Lady of ARGENTINA. Same as I can't see her in the title role of Thouroughly Modern Millie. I think they should find one of the many Latina actresses out there for this.
