I was asking people in the dresisng room today @ my show if there were any songs they listen to before an audition/performance to get pumped up and ready?
Usually before an audition, I listen to Out Tonight from RENT...I don't know why, it just gets me ready, focused and excited.
Before a performance, I usually listen to You Can't Stop the Beat. And yes, I dance to it! It gets my blood flowing!
Last year when I did Forum we all listened to Defying Gravity, and Holding out For a Hero. Because we had a guy fly in the opening song and because of the character Hero. It was good times. I'd suggest finding something like that, that kind of matches with your show.
In terms of show tunes only to get pumped up, I listen to:
"Another Day" - Rent "Corner of the Sky" - Pippin "Louder than Words" - Tick, Tick...Boom! "Everyone Tells Jason to See a Psychiatrist" - March of the Falsettos "Need to Know" - Weird Romance
I never get "pumped up" before a performance though. I am always that guy that disappears until 5 minutes before curtain and doesn't talk to anyone when I reappear. I like quiet alone time to prepare/get in character. Updated On: 8/3/05 at 06:18 PM
The Wizard and I is my "feel good and powerful" song. But listening to Wicked, Hairspray, Rent, The Wild Party, Avenue Q, helps me pump up my self.
you say i'm weird! look at everyone you're sitting with! and hey, those guys over there just threw napkins up in the air like they were on something! it's contajous! you can't help it!
Yeah, it's so fun. I don't even know what it is about that song that I like so much. I guess it's the guitar and everything really gets me excited and ready.
Ok before an audition i usually listen to anything from RENT or HAIR; usually HAIR though!
When we did Cinderella we all did the "Cha Cha Slide" in our 20lb costumes and then had to go fix the wear on the make-up! ok the costumes weren't 20lbs but they were made out of heavy HEAVY matirial theat looked like my couch. We also listenen to Cabaret before one performance or it, West Side Story before another, RENT everynight at least "Rent" it got us all pumped!
At a theatre I regularly perform at, a group of us would go up to the third floor rehearsal room and get our groove on to West Side Story, Tick, Tick...Boom!, Rent, and L5Y just to get the blood pumping and adrenaline going...it was fun and nice to let loose before going into performance mode.
"Because what is more like love than the ocean? You can play in it, drown in it. It can be clear and bright enough to hurt your eyes, or covered in fog; hidden behind a curve of road, and then suddenly there in full glory. Its waves come like breaths, in and out, in and out, body stretched to forever in its possibilities, and yet its heart lies deep, not fully knowable, inconceivably majestic."
I forgot about "Into the Fire"! That really is a great pump-up song!! My friends and I sometimes sing that and "Creation of Man" also from Scarlet Pimpernel before shows because they're just great songs!!
And for some reason, "You're the One that I Want" from Grease and "Holding Out for a Hero" from Footloose are fun pump-up songs too.
Rosencrantz: "Be happy - if you're not even HAPPY what's so good about surviving? We'll be all right. I suppose we just go on."
- from Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
my school has a tradition of doing TimeWarp...overplayed, i know, but oh so much fun. We have dance moves to it, and added in parts. It's a lot of fun.
