The boxes are generally seating at the Colonial. The set felt like it was designed for a Broadway theatre and made to fit the Colonial. We were in the middle right of the front balcony and it felt like an obstructed view seat (it was not advertised as such and really shouldn't have been).
It is a BREATHTAKING set, regardless. I'm curious to see how it evolves as it eyes Broadway.
I imagine the producers of Moulin Rouge are looking at 1400-1700 seat theatres for its Broadway run which would rule out theatres like the Belasco or the Kerr.
I'm hoping they take their time with this one and not rush it in if it isn't ready. Timbers is bouncing right into Beetlejuice after and I fear a Broadway transfer in the Spring would be hasty.
So which is it? The Shubert or the Hirschfeld? Also, there is still the idea that Moulin Rouge won't even come in this season due to King Kong being produced by the same company that's doing Moulin Rouge.
My dream theatre for this show would actually be the Winter Garden, only because of that giant marquee!

You know, some people actually like Phantom (including myself.) Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I hope that as long as I'm alive, Phantom never closes because of snide comments like yours!
If it is moving into the Shubert in March, then are they moving Mockingbird? It seems to make zero sense since Mockingbird is not gonna play three months and close up shop.

It makes me chuckle everytime something new is opening and people go "move phantom" as if moving a show on Broadway is that easy or cheap. it is terribly expensive to move a show. it costs almost as much as creating said show from scratch as there are endless union restrictions. It is much cheaper to do this in London thats why more shows in London seem to move around when needed. So phantom wont ever move, even though I think it would be nice in a smaller house.
I do love the Belasco, shame that it's location seems to be a disservice. it has one of the deepest substage areas which makes it great for set designers.
As for the shubert, i've only been in once for spamalot, from the outside it does not seem that big, is the stage and wing space considered on the 'large' side of things on Broadway?
MR's design lends itself to a theatre with a double box setting, but that can easily be altered.
Shame the old Hellger (spelling) is not available.
Also with the talk of winder garden, is school of rock doing poorly? if any show could transfer between that and Phantom it probably would be more likely to transfer that one.

While the cost is significant, it isn't nearly that much. The first time Chicago transferred, the tour set was used. I assume the second time they transferred they just moved that set (which was probably more easily mobile). The Lion King also used the tour set when it transferred. Mama Mia was the only show I am aware of that used an entirely new set for its transfer.

I don't know the numbers, but the Shubert wouldn't have any less space than any of the other theaters mentioned in this thread (I'm pretty sure the stage and wing space is larger than the Majestic, too).

I don't think it would look good in the Winter Garden at all.

Personally, I felt that the Majestic would have been perfect for Harry Potter. Phantom is the only show on Broadway without a stop clause, so only Cameron Macintosh and Andrew Lloyd Webber can close it.
Honestly, I feel like the Marquis has the best layout of this theater, but it's so drab. But maybe they can make that work? I think the overhang is great for sitelines. Especially with the extended stage. I just feel like it will look too small at any other theater.
