Yes, it's hard for one to live up to a reputation as high as Patti LuPone's, even for Patti LuPone herself! She has somewhat of a goddess status, which is slightly overrated. Still a great performer, though.
"Rather than ignore those who choose to publish their opinions without actually talking to me, I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love."
-Neil Patrick Harris
Everyone needs their time to shine. Even if it's over a 30 year period.
Maybe she is, maybe she isn't, but she does a damn good job at what she does.
Personally, with Gypsy closed, her infamous show "stopping" performance on Jan 10th already published in magazines and around the web. We got bigger fish to fry come 2009 on the Great White Way via the economic stimuli
Herbie: "Honey, Don't you know there's a depression?"
Rose: "Of Course I know, I Watch Fox News"

Broadway Schedule
December 5th- Hamilton, On Your Feet
December 19th- Noises Off, Edith Piaf Concert at Town Hall
I am not the least bit impressed with her. Listening to her sing is painful. For someone who graduated from such a big school, she sure doesn't have much talent to show for it, just ego.
I think she is very overrated. But not in her performance as Mamma Rose in "Gypsy".
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Listen, I was one of the audience members who was not pleased with her outburst on the 10th, but let's be clear--Ms. LuPone is a very talented actor and singer. Maybe you disagree with her choices, but there's no denying the technical skills she possesses.
She's brave and risky and with that comes a great diversity of opinion and for that alone she deserves a modicum of respect.
I thought Gypsy was overrated, as was she. I wasn't moved by her performance, I barely chuckled at the strippers. I simply wasn't entertained.
For me I don't get the whole "LuPone Love Affair". To each his own.

See, I know there may be some disagreement, but she really didn't seem to be THIS big until recently... At least not so in your face. But I like her.
There was a thread a posted a couple of years ago asking why she was so controversial (at the time it wasn't as apparent).... I wish I could find it, but when searching Patti LuPone there are too many threads to go through.

Both Sondheim and Lupone are over rated. He can never compare to Rodgers & Hammerstein, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Styne. She is OK, but not a truly great performer. Updated On: 2/1/09 at 11:42 AM

-No dear, what's REALLY overrated is the over usage of the 'newbie' and 'sockpuppet' assumption every time someone has a differing opinion to yours.
"Say this with her next to you will earn you a knuckle sandwich"
-Why? Is she going to give me a good hiding? Of course I won't expect anything less than a knuckle sandwich from someone who believes she's the best thing since sliced bread, pardon the pun.
"This is like saying : "Is Sondheim overrated"? -Um since you mentioned, yeah he is.
"Both Sondheim and Lupone are over rated. He can never compare to Rodgers & Hammerstein, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter Styne. She is OK, but not a truly great performer. "
-Thank you. I love me some good ole R&H and only on rare occasion, a Sondheim tune. That's just me, yes I'm a Philistine. Continue living your lives.
I think every performer is at least slightly overrated among his or her fans, just because people get so enthusiastic about their favorite performers that they practically worship them. I'm guilty of this as well-- I can get REALLY fangirly over my favorite actors and overlook their faults. I mean, no one can be totally objective about these things, just because we're all human. And once you get up to Broadway level, where everyone really is extremely talented, it all comes down to a matter of personal taste who the best performers are.
In my pants, she has burst like the music of angels, the light of the sun! --Marius Pantsmercy
What exactly does overrated mean and who decides? Is there a panel, like the g8, of world leaders who get together and vote what is and what is not overrated?
Or is it just your own opinion? ---Which in my opinion, is overrated.
Think of different "buzz words", because overrated is overrated.

Saying someone is overrated is not the same thing as saying they are untalented. You can still really like someone and think they are talented but still think they are overrated.
