Okay, this is one of the all time classic OBC recordings. Those of you who grew up with the original, have it ingrained in their head, can't imagine it any differently... Who will buy the new cast recording?
I am not pre-judging the quality of the revival, but it will be so hard to hear it any other way. (Of course, I am in the minorty who feels it is a bit too soon to revive it anyway.)
I felt the same way about Sweeney until I heard the amazing new orchestrations, but I can't imagine them reworking ACL all that much...
I think I might check the new recording out. I'm an ACL "newbie". I don't know much about the show at all, except that it's the longest running American musical. I was surprised at a revival so soon. But it looks good! I'm anxious to see how it develops.
I probably will buy it but I love the OBCR so I might not like it at first. I'm one of those OBC whores, as some like to call me. I just really get attached to my OBCR's, since Broadway is all I listen to. The new ACL cast looks amazing though so I'm sure the recording will be wonderful.
Put it this way; it can't be anyworse then the Movie Soundtrack.
Everything about the Revival looks fantastic and one can only hope the New Cast Recording will be just as worthy to remain in permament play circulation.
I have to admit, there are very few "Revival Cast" recordings that supplant the OBCs in any significant way. I enjoy the various DOLLYs and SUNSETs because of the star performances, and often London Cast recordings shed a different light on the show. But Molina is a snore on the otherwise beautifully recorded new FIDDLER, the Applegate CHARITY's bonus tracks are the only thing of interest, and the more-complete LITTLE SHOP is sorely missing an Audrey. I have wracked my brain to think of a revival cast recording that betters the original, and I am stumped. Anyone have any ideas?
I will buy it - but I'm also the sort of person with four Les Mis recordings, so...
Also, if it's more complete - I'd be quicker to buy it...
Now what would you say if today I started over?
Without a thing but this taped together four leaf clover
And I'll pretend like everything is already alright
And I'll run toward the sun till the castle's out of sight
There are some small musical pieces that weren't preserved on the original recording, so it will be nice to have a "more" complete recording - but it will be hard to top the OBC.
Absolutely, I am def. going to check out the new recording. I own the original and I am not happy at all with the majority of the songs. I hope they made them better. I am one of those people who love revivals more than originals when they were recorded way back when.
I personally prefer the revival of The Music Man to the original. I KNOW I'm going to be crucified for this, but I think Barbara Cook is a bit pitchy and swoopy in the original (I was quite disappointed when I purchased it) and Rebecca Luker sounds AMAZING, I think Craig Bierko sounds SO MUCH like Robert Preston, but with better vocal technique and I really like some of the new dance orchestrations that Susan Strohman had done. I think it freshened the piece up and made it a "classic" that almost felt new.
Of course I'll be getting it - but I get everything!
The OBC is missing quite a bit of material. (Does anyone here agree that the montage should have been recorded complete, and the rehearsal version of "One" should have been dropped instead? On the recording it would have given the finale version of "One" more power.) Also for a COlumbia album of 1975, ACL is quite short clocking in around 45 minutes.
I do not understand why people think it is too soon to revive it: It closed in 1990 - 16 years ago. The older you get the faster time flies.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks." Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
I really, really, really want a complete montage out of this.
Badly.
Whether we get one or not... that's probably up in the air.

I wouldn't mind a slightly modern spin on the orchestrations. That funky electric guitar stuff during "I Hope I Get It" and a lot of "Music and the Mirror" could sound less dated. I would also love a more complete recording, but if it is given the antiseptic lifeless studio-in-a-vaccuum recordings as many new revivals have (Company, Sound of Music, Music Man, Sweet Charity, Little Shop, Nine, etc.), then forget it.

"I have wracked my brain to think of a revival cast recording that betters the original, and I am stumped. Anyone have any ideas?"
I can think of a couple of instances, but they generally are due to really old (and often woefully incomplete) OBC recordings that are a huge sonic improvement in their revival recordings. I much prefer the 60s revival "Finian's Rainbow" to the original OBC, and though it's not actually a revival cast, the Jones/Cassidy "Brigadoon" is miles better than the OBC, which sounds like it was recorded in Grand Central Station at 8:30 a.m. on a Monday.
I want full montage with "gonorrhea" and all the random lines they previously dropped. Also Connie's "king and I" verse, Don's section... Judy's "Dead Body"... Gregs "gee I'll never get to wear nice clothes!" <- cause its a great line.
and would it be too much to ask to have "Nothing" put back into the montage. It can be its own track but as long as its where it should be sequentially.
Id like to have the tap combination... which german cast album has - except the german one does not include the "adlibs" like Sheila's "When it's over do i needa drink!"
and would it be too much to have the underscores... yeh - like that would happen. -Sheila's underscore is the best.. and Kristines is the cutest thing, fits her personality perfectly. Oh well.
I am excited for the recording - and I am anticapting very little cutting. I think since the first album experienced a lot of cutting they will want to preserve the whole show- may be. At least thats how i think Bayoork would feel.

"Celebrating a birthday this week: Rene Descartes is 412! Do you know who he is? Then why are you watching this show? You could probably get into college and even get one of those job things. As for the rest of us; Amanda Bynes is 22! Yay!" -E!'s "The Soup"
I'm tapping my toes waiting for a new recording. The calf muscle on my right leg should look quite interesting by release time!
It will be interesting to hear new texture in terms of tone and phrasing. Orchestrations should sound very different, no two recordings/mixes sound exactly alike. A little bit of tweaking with the arrangements wouldn't offend either.
One is probably my favourite show tune ever. I'll be queuing up for a new recording: - )
I'm excited about the new recording, but I grew up with the original recording, so it will be an interesting comparison.
...What happened next, was stranger still, a woman breathless and afraid, appeared out of the night, completely dressed in white. She had a secret she would tell, of one who had mistreated her. Her face and frightened gaze, my mind cannot erase...But then she ran from view. She looked so much like you...
