I saw RENT the other night at Starlight Theatre in KC, and while it's obviously not as nice and formal as indoor, smaller theatres, there were a group of people there (I'm guessing RENTHEADS, although I doubt that people that were truly such huge fans of the show would be this rude), but EVERY time a character came on stage, this group of people would shout the name of the character, so at the beginning of the show it's completely silent and all of sudden you hear this screaming group of people yelling MARK MARK MARK MARK! And they did it throughout the entire show. I was about to go insane.

No elevators in Broadway theaters. When I went to Avenue Q up in the balcony, I felt like I was mountain climbing.

The thing I hate most is when the people in back of you talk really loudly so you can hear them when your really trying to focous on the show. When I saw DRS on Gregs last day, a person was on their cell phone and was playing Mrs. Pacman. I thought I was about to shoot her. All I kept hearing was "Eat the ghost! Get it! Get It! Come on, YOU STUPID YELLOW EATING THING! EATING THE FREAKING GHOST!!" I'm lucky my heads still attached to my neck.
Also when I saw Wicked the little girl in front of me kept telling her mom that she's hungry. So guess what she gets during intermission? Not one... Not two... but 3 bags of M&M's, soda and pringles. I couldn't hear anything except for Megan Hilty's belting at the end because this little girl loves to unwrapp all of her M&M bags a certian way and slurp her soda.

And no elevators. That pisses me off a lot.

Latheatrelover are you kidding? Dude, if you have legs, use them. If walking up in that balcony makes you feel like you are climbing a mountain, then you need to do some more walking.

Seriously though, what is a pain about some of the old New York theatres is that they aren't very wheel chair accessible. Especially the Golden theatre, where Avenue Q is at. If you are in a wheelchair and have to go to the bathroom at that theatre...you are pretty screwed.

broadwayguy4, it isn't as easy to climb mountains when you are in your Fifties, lol. I felt like Corey's mother in Barefoot in the Park. I guess I've been spoiled here in L.A. and elsewhere theaters can be recently built, because they think to add such conveniences. Actually, now I think about it, except for maybe the Pantages Theater in Hollywood, we don't have any stage theaters that look from the outside like Broadway theaters. They build most of them here now on the scale of concert halls (like Lincoln Center) and they definitely need elevators.

But I do feel sorry for those wheelchair bound, like you say. I think it was at Spamalot at the Shubert in NYC, where the bathroom for men in the balcony was actually down part of the ways through a stairwell stairs. I can't imagine how anyone in a wheelchair would have gotten down to it.

When it comes to musical theatre itself, I really hate it when a show has characters that basically have Act One or Act Two off pretty much (Lestat is the latest perpetrator of this crime.) Unfortunately, some of my favorite shows do this like Aida and We Will Rock You. I just think it sucks that a person gets cast for a show and then finds out that his or her character won't make it past Act One. Especially when it's a big star like Carolee Carmello. You know that's why they changed the ending of Lestat just so she could be in both acts.

I hate those poeple that have to be the last person to clap. I mean WTF. Is there some competition Im not aware of?

I also hate when people are like "Where has musical theater gone?" When talking about Wicked or some of the newer shows. I mean, I know everyone has their own opinions about it but come on, not all of us are old enough to know what theater "use" to be.

Obviously, I adore Wicked and am proud to say it...*Ducks possible flying objects*

When i saw chicago a couple of years back, the teenager sitting next to me thought he was the perfect Amos. He sang the whole "Mr. Cellophane." That wasn't the worst part. He wasn't asctually sitting in his seat during the show. His shoes were on the seat and he had his knees together against his chest and was sitting there like he was at camp or on a picnic.

Also when I saw sweeney they wouldn't let you in if you were late till 40 in after performance started. I think that is strict, but a good thing.
That's because there's not a good break in the music until 40 minutes in, so it would disrupt the flow of the show. I mean, there's not even a break for applause 6 or 7 songs into the show.

I'm guessing RENTHEADS, although I doubt that people that were truly such huge fans of the show would be this rude
Exactly. Huge fans of the show would stab someone that interrupted the show like that.

No elevators in Broadway theaters. When I went to Avenue Q up in the balcony, I felt like I was mountain climbing.
Then buy orchestra tickets instead.

Ensemble members talking in the background of a scene. Not in a "mingling" crowd setting, like in a really dramatic moment where everyone is supposed to be focusing on the leads. Do they not realize that they ARE onstage? Just because they're not in the spotlight doesn't mean no one notices them.

When actors make eye contact with me. It just weirds me out. I like the fourth wall.

I hate it when you go to RENT and all of these RENTheads in the first two rows scream for every character... especially Angel. They're not screaming for the actors, in which case I semi-understand. But the characters? I mean, GET A LIFE.

And then, it's like you're at a BSB concert! They scream after every song, and YOU CANT HEAR THE LINES THAT THE ACTORS ARE SAYING. It's a show, not a freaking CONCERT!

"When people wear jeans to the theatre! When I was @ Wicked there was a huge group of teenage girls wearing jeans and flip-flops!"

I agree with the flip flop thing. But personally, since I come from a distance and sit on the train and stuff, I usually just wear a nice shirt, Or I dont care since I wear the shirt that I buy from the show.

I go to the theatre regularly, so thats another reason.

Flip flops should go die. unless they are by a pool. lol

I hate when people say a show gets "cancelled." Shows CLOSE. They're only cancelled if the run gets cancelled before it opens.

people who wear prom dresses or floor legnths gowns, especially to shows like rent and in the heights, its not so much a pet peeve as it is just hilarious.

people who spell Roger "Rodger" or Angel "Angle" Sorry, he is not at 45 degrees.

To an earlier remark: not all operas are sung full-through. A lot of musicals are sung full-through because it takes away the problem of having to write good transitions from spoken dialogue into song. At least, I believe ALW once said that that's why most of his are full-through.

Anyway, I can't stand musical theatre diction many times. For instance, turning the "ooh" sound into "ew." Or the opposite where it turns into "awww." Drives me crazy.

I hate it when, after a button, the actors fall down laughing at what just transpired. Like in the SWEET CHARITY film, after "There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This."

I also hate people who try to leave during the curtain call.

People who think High School Musical is musical theatre.
I get this all the time:
"Ohhh, so you like musicals? You must love High School Musical!"
Um, no. I like live theatre, thanks.
