I think it's really interesting how some people assumed all those camera flashes were Latino audience members. That, to me, is the most surprising thing of all because it is so obvious by looking at curtain call videos and photos online that those cameras are from the press. Just looking at the type of cameras gives it away. It speaks loudly of just how unclassy and repugnant of behavior some people think Latinos are capable of. I'm not offended, as much as it sounds like I am. I think it's effing hilarious that people thought all those wildly flashing, bulky cameras were being manned by some ghetto Latino with 19 of his/her relatives doing the same. XD
Having said that, I think there are far too many people on here being apologetic and needlessly justifying themselves when it's more likely they are some of the most kind, generous, considerate, and warm individuals around. Yes, even those who though Juana and her tia Concha were excitedly snapping away at Ricky Martin's junk with cameras they stole from Woolworth's.

It might be also noted that in my experience, at Repertorio Espanol audiences - almost always and nightly primarily Latino - are otherwise indistinguishable from the most decorous and respectful in the city. Not that another white boy voice of defense is needed in this discussion, least of all mine again!

Posted: 3/17/12 at 10:55pmAt today's matinee, there was incessant chatter during the overture, cell phones were going off, and people were eating food throughout the performance--including unwrapping noisy packages of food during the most inopportune moments. Oh, wait, I misread the thread title. This was at the matinee performance of Khovanshchina at the Met. Truly one of the worst audiences I've ever experienced.

I remember the loud rude people at Mary poppins. The candy wrappers, texters, drinks with ice cubes smashing the bottom of the cups.
There weren't any Latinos in that audience,....
I think we should just hate on ignorant tourists instead of a particular group of people.

As I said above, I haven't lived on the East Coast for over a quarter-century. But I have several friends who are Chicano (Mexican-American) directors and playwrights, and I've attended everything from autos sacrementales (Latino passion plays) to Culture Clash to Luis Valdez plays at the Mark Taper Forum. I've also attended multilingual performances at universities with predominantly working-class, Latino student bodies.
At no time has a Chicano audience misbehaved in my presence or, in fact, behaved any differently than an Anglo audience would.
So at the very least, the stereotypes asserted in this thread do not apply to ALL Latinos.

Talk about your first-world problems...
What do you propose they do? Tear out the lobbies to extend the ladies room?
The Richard Rogers could easily be renovated, because the layout is such a waste of space. The whole ring-around-the-rosie parade around the bathroom creates more traffic jams (especially the sink area) than a conventional layout would.
At the very least, they could paint over those creepy cherubs on the wall that look like Jackie Mason.
