He is more dedicated to his job than JLY (and a better actor). He should have won the Tony. (JLY fans: please don't attack me for this statement...thanks!)

He probably wants to be there all the time and has not had the misfortune of illness or emergency that would prevent him from going to work.

It's probably more luck than anything that he is at 100%. And we get to reap the benefits of his excellent record. For someone who comes from way out of town every once in a while to see Sweeney Todd, I am happy that I have never seen a "The role of Sweeney Todd will be played by..." sign at the box office.

Even if it might have been his luck, we still can acknowledge him, can't we? What is up with some people becoming not being positive and encouraging?

alwy15, how can you say that attendance is not a proof of dedication? It's obvious there are times when Michael needs a break, yet he doesn't take any days off!

Why did this so-called "positive" thread have to begin with a negative swipe at John Lloyd Young?

If you don't want to be attacked for the statement, why make it in the first place? That's like throwing a snowball at someone in a snowball fight but then saying "Oh, I am not actually playing so you can't hit me back with a snowball." And who should and should not have won the Tony is a matter of opinion, and clearly it was the opinion of the Tony committee that JLY should have won. Perhaps you should write a letter to the Tony committee explaining how they made a terrible mistake and that your opnion is THE right one?

Just in defense of perfect attendance celebration. A hypothetical question, what if Michael was sick, but decided to go on anyway? Whether it was because he had to because his understudy was out, or because he just wanted to go on. We don't know this. So maybe just think about that before you sarcastically praise the man's immune system.

It was started with a "swipe" at any performer who misses a lot of shows.
That is a pet peeve of mine.
It may not always be the performer's fault, greedy producers will ask an actor to do way too many promos, but I feel an Actor who crates a role in a Broadway Show has a responsibility to his role and his Show to be there.
I was trying to point out that an Actor like Michael Cerveris should be an example to others how to get a good reputation and Respect his craft.
The attendance at The Wedding Singer is especially troubling to me, as I have stated before.
We read everyday on these boards about understudies going on.
That said, I do want this to be a positive thread to Mr. Cerveris' dedication and "luck" has nothing to do with it,
He is a Pro.

Oh god, luck has a hell of a lot to do with it, but one can appreciate his accomplishment regardless.

"It was started with a "swipe" at any performer who misses a lot of shows."

For the record, JLY is only technically contracted for 7 shows a week, he is allowed to do the 8th if he wants, but there is no obligation. And more often than not, he chooses to do it.

Was that in his Original contract or was that added after producers started making the BOYS do so much publicity?

It's all about work ethic. Michael's name is above the title, so he's giving his all. It's like Harvey and Hairspray/Fiddler.

Are people seeing Wedding Singer for Laura Benanti (who's had many health/vocal problems in recent memory) and Amy Spanger? No. The core audience is made up of Stephen Lynch fans. His face is on the billboard in Times Square, not their's. They all seem to love doing the show, so I doubt they're taking absences because they don't feel like performing. If you're ill, why should you make it worse by going on when you physically can't?

WithoutaTrace - You do realize how demanding JLY's role is, right? I've seen Sweeney three times and it still doesn't top singing 27 songs in a falsetto. JLY is contracted for 7 shows a week, so he doesn't blow his voice completely. The music of that is far harder on a weekly schedule than Sweeney.

Kudos to Michael...that's pretty impressive! I LOVED him in Sweeney, think he's a magnificent actor and would have been happy for him if he had won the Tony.

It doesn't make me think that John was any less deserving, though. It was a star-making role and I thought he was sensational.

I disagree
Singing Sondheim and actually acting and progressing the story is much harder than singing 60's banal Music with of-Stage help.
I don't count but Sweeney sings plenty of songs also.

It's all about work ethic.

"luck" has nothing to do with it

How can the two of you say that? I understand that it's not ALL luck, but it's not all one or the other. Whether or not someone gets sick is pretty much up to chance; and people who take great care of themselves, shockingly, still do get sick sometimes. I think it takes a performer with a great work ethic to go so far as to work while he or she is sick, but it's unfair to hold everyone to that standard.

You are right again Luvtheemceee.
But if you get sick easily
and can't sing 8 shows a week
You should concentrate on other mediums than Broadway.

Well, say you get the stomach flu. I mean, you clearly can't perform, but it's not an issue of having poor vocal stamina. It's just crappy luck.

Don't lie because you've been called on it, CurtainPullDowner. This thread did NOT start with a swipe at "any" performer. It started as a swipe at ONE PARTICULAR performer: John Lloyd Young.

Your exact nasty words are right here on the thread: and he ain't singing "Sherie, Sherie, Baby"
