I really loved Matilda- the score, book, cast, production- but I do prefer Light in the Piazza too.

I think Matilda is a worthy addition to the other Best Musical winners, and certainly better than Memphis.

Yeah, I haven't seen Matilda yet, but I did see Kinky Boots and it was . . . okay, nothing more. I certainly have no intention of getting the album. I somewhat have a prejudice against Matilda -- can't say why and maybe it will, in fact, be the "best" musical this season, which doesn't say much about the rest of the season.

>>"It will be true shock for them to nominate a seasonal show like A Christmas Story."

Yet it fits the Tony criteria regarding house size and length of run (at least to my knowledge), so I'd be very happy to see it included for any nominations.

The "pickin's are slim" regarding new shows on Broadway and A Christmas Story was a good show (at least by its score).

Pasek and Paul are not household names yet. Although many folks hear their music on Smash, I feel (and sincerely doubt that) most viewers distinguish their songs from the ones written by the better known Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

I'm anxious to see/hear more about Dogfight. If a Tony nomination for A Christmas Story puts their names a little bit higher on the marquee, and makes their names a bit more recognizable amongst the credits for Smash, I'm all for it (even if Smash doesn't survive to see Season 3 !).

A Christmas Story is certainly eligible for a Best Musical nomination, but it is seen purely as a light holiday entertainment and nothing more, no matter how well done. There are always a few strange nominees every year, but this would be truly out there.

If they do nominate something like A Christmas Story or Bring It On it will be more to send a message to something else that it wasn't appreciated.

>>"I saw the light in the piazza at curve Leicester in the uk a couple of years ago, no way is that a better musical than matilda, gosh I'm stunned someone has said that!!!!"

I based my opinion on the complexity of the two scores (but I think I get where you're coming from!).

For my tastes, the score for Piazza is just genius. I base my opinion on several musically academic criterion.

HOWEVER, even though I don't find the same intellectual construction behind the score for Matilda, that doesn't mean that I wasn't equally, emotionally effected by the score for Matilda. The two scores are apples and oranges (IMO) regarding construction, yet I find that I'm equally impressed by both.

IMO, since I'm impressed by both scores, I choose to break "a tie" (in my mind) by awarding the composer who demonstrated the higher level of musical knowledge, yet didn't leave "a peon" like me behind in the dust... (in other words, "writing over my head").

For me, that composer (when push comes to shove) is Adam Guettel. BUT --- (and I have a really big but[t]...) that doesn't mean that I don't agree with you. It's a "Sophie's Choice". One has to draw a line somewhere in order to choose "the best" - whatever that may mean!

I think the key phrase here is, "no matter how well done"

Call me a "cock-eyed optimist", but my hope is that the Tony Committee will see differently. I have to believe that is true because if I don't, I will have to succumb to the notion that MONEY (or DISNEY...) governs what will succeed on Broadway.

Please don't burst my bubble...

Like i've said before, I LOVED Matilda. I think the music is phenomenal, as well as the production. Out of any show, Matilda deserves to win. It is fresh, innovative, with great performances and music. I think the only true competition is Kinky Boots. If Hardbody gets nominated, great. But it has no shot. As I've said before, I would love to see Bring It On or Christmas Story get a nom over HB.

I was not a huge fan of Matilda but agree with those who say it's got the Tony win pretty much sewn up. However assaultive I found it, it was immeasurably more a piece of theater art than the commercial schlock that I found Kinky Boots to be. (Haven't seen Motown, Bring it On or Christmas Story.) But has no-one considered the score for The Nance as a possible contender for a nom? Great pastiche songs that carry a good deal of the power of the play-- and God knows there's precedent for nominating the scores of plays in weak seasons (of which I find this one).

As for Memphis, I'd rate it just a 1/2 step above Kinky Boots-- comparing shows to that Tony winner is just one more indication of how weak the season has been for new shows.

For Best Musical, I think Matilda and Motown will be solid nominations with Kinky Boots, Cinderella, Bring It On and Hands on a Hardbody equally fighting for the other two slots (I agree with Whizzer that a holiday musical getting the nomination extremely unlikely). The nominations for Best Score will be a bit more interesting as Motown and Cinderella will be ineligible. I do think either Bring It On or Christmas Story could knock Kinky Boots out of contention.

I love the score for Matilda. I'm a little surprised at the negative reactions to the show, but then I realized this is BWW and added the appropriate grains of salt. Saw Piazza in the Chicago tryout and on Broadway (preferred the Chicago production and cast) and it was an odd sensation. I didn't feel anything profound when watching it, but there was this residual emotional resonance the show had that I could not shake for WEEKS. It was after the show that I understood how affecting the material truly was.

Cinderella has been been put forward for the Best Revival category.

"I feel like I am the ONLY person who actually likes Memphis."

You're not. I liked it; so did a good many others. It was definitely not for the snob set, though.

One thing's certain: it was a hell of a lot better than the puerile Book of Mormon, the godawful Once, and the deadly-dull Matilda.

The biggest competition will be for Best Director of a Musical nominations. A lot of big names will be left uncalled. Could be more directors nominated for revivals than new shows.

Oh, yeah. Cranial flatulence on my part.

I did enjoy Memphis. I thought it was a pretty solid conventional book musical. But I thought American Idiot was more artistically creative as a show, even with its preexisting score.

MATILDA is a "Kids Show"; plain and simple. The plot is utterly RIDICULOUS, the characters are all stagnant and stupid, and they don't change at all through the course of the story, the comedy is over the top and juvenile. Not only that, MATILDA has absolutely no emotion or heart at its core. I found the whole show asinine (and I was REALLY looking forward to seeing it too.)
A CHRISTMAS STORY is a "family show" and has much broader appeal. It had CHARACTERS instead of CARICATURES, and there were moments in A CHRISTMAS STORY where I found myself very moved by what I was watching. And that is something even the movie was never able to do. In fact, I was not looking forward to seeing A CHRISTMAS STORY because I was never a fan of the movie.

I've seen the show, but I find it basically irrelevant whether or not you've seen the shows when it comes to guessing nominations/wins. Same thing goes for the Oscars. It's mostly campaign politics and money that win awards. It's naive to believe otherwise.

In a way it's harder to predict winners when you do see everything because good performances that will be nominated, but have no chance of winning and can mess with your head. If you looked at the Oscars this year with your head and not your heart you knew with 100% certainty that Lawrence was winning Best Actress. If you went to see Amour it was easy to get caught up in "Will Riva pull an upset?" thinking.

There are always a few surprises and upsets, but on the whole you can see Tony & Academy Award Winners coming from a mile away.

"but I find it basically irrelevant whether or not you've seen the shows when it comes to guessing nominations/wins."

But many who comment aren't merely "guessing", they are addressing the quality of a show they haven't seen and even comparing the quality to shows they have seen. I think that's the issue here.

Whizzer, the year of Spring Awakening/Grey Gardens/Mary Poppins/Legally Blonde/Curtains was fairly competitive.

Spring Awakening was the front runner for sure, but there was a possibility that Grey Gardens could usurp it. And as I recall, some felt that since Curtains was possibly the last K&E show to make it Bway (Scottsboro was not on anyone's radar at the time) it might win for sentimental reasons.

For the record, I can totally see Bring It On sneaking into the Best Musical category over Hardbody or Motown.

You're right taz- the Spring Awakening/Grey Gardens year was competitive, but really I think that year is a good example of my example with thinking Riva could beat Lawrence. It was easy to fall in love with Grey Gardens and think that it could have toppled Spring Awakening, but I think in reality it never had a chance.

The Piazza/DRS/Jersey Boys year was competitive too, but I sadly wasn't surprised by that outcome either.

I can see Motown being snubbed if the critics intensely dislike it. It could be the Priscilla/9 to 5 type exclusion. I feel like Bring It On is such a distant memory though, and it also failed to sell well after the initial summer months. If Bring It On had been a decent sized hit I would be more inclined to think it had a shot at a nomination.
