Actually, aside from obvious covers, she writes on 99% of her music.
I just find it deeply silly that people still feel the need to engage in "whither Madonna a talent" debates when the woman has been the sh!t for 20 plus years. I don't know of any rock star of such "legend status" that has to deal with such scrutiny. But, I suspect it's because she gets under people's skin--and THAT I would imagine would be mission accomplished for most artists.

So I've done a little research and if Madonna does name her album Defying Gravity, it is not as a Wicked reference. Apparently, Defying Gravity is also a Kabbalah term. In the Kabbalah there is something called the 72 Names of God and number 43 is Defying Gravity - achieving mind over matter. If anyone watched the 20/20 Kabbalah thing last night, there was a glimpse of a Kabbalah shirt with the term on it...
It's probably just as well that her album has nothing to do with Wicked, I can just see Madonna crazies (mind you, I like her, but like any celebs she's got some crazy ass fans) and Wicked crazies joining forces...
As for the Britney as Elphaba thing... for me it's more than just throwing up a little. Ugh... it makes my skin crawl to think about it.
Meh, I'm not really much of a Madonna fan, but I don't dislike her or anything. To me, she's just ok. I don't think I'd like her involved with Wicked though. Can you imagine what that could become? A big name like that linked with an already very popular show. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Wicked, but the whole Madonna idea makes me a bit uncomfortable. And felineofavenueb, you're right, "little" was an understatement.
An interview with MTV UK after Live 8 just confirmed that Madonna's upcoming album will be called CONFESSIONS ON A DANCEFLOOR. On the album will be be a dance song called "I Love New York," which is already making me excited.
So her album will NOT be called "Defying Gravity," as rumoured.

The new big rumour on London's Westend is that MADONNA will be starring in a stage version of EVITA next year on the Westend. Apparently, there are a lot of people talking about it.
