Kristen could handle it. I don't know about Amy - she was weak in the Enchanted soundtrack, and don't get me started on her performance at the Oscars. But I think if she works on her voice hardcore, she could do wonders.
I'm very pleasantly surprised! I watched her 'Fame' performance, I'm hoping she sang it live...which if she did, yeah she'll probably be fine as Glinda.
Computers have taken far worse voices and made them sound good, so Kristen's may be ok.
Amy Adams being cast would be a mistake i feel. She's not a great singer and I get the impression she would go down the obvious route and make Glinda a bimbo.
I wish we didn't have to rely on 'names' to sell films. It's so restricting.
I don't see Glinda as a bimbo. I don't think she's supposed to be either.
She's ditzy and blonde, but there's a lot more to her character...they show her being the mean popular girl, then you see she has a moral conscience after Elphaba is humiliated at the Oz Dust Ballroom, she takes Elphaba under her wing so to speak and shows her affection the way she knows best - make over.
She then has to deal with losing her boyfriend to her best friend, selling out her best friend and effectively leading to Nessarose being killed...THEN she shows some back bone, has to say goodbye to her best friend and her fiance forever (well, grieve their deaths) to take hold of Oz for the greater good and not her personal choice.
Ok, rant over.
But no, IMO, I wouldn't say she's a bimbo at all. She's not simply a stupid blonde girl.
To be fair, casting Zac Efron would ensure a box office hit.
Obviously he could only play the young Fiyero, meaning that he would only have to perform Dancing Through Life. Which he probably could do quite well.
I just don't feel that they would go there because they don't need to. They can afford to cast someone far more talented in the role.
Plus, I'm sure Universal isn't tight on budget...but Zac Efron would cost a fair amount. I doubt he would do it either, he seems to be trying to take himself far more seriously these days. Once the High School Musical is finished, I'm not sure he'll return to musicals (well, until he needs a career boost).
Actually back when Hairspray was being released he said that he loves doing movie musicals and would like to keep doing them.... I'll try and find the link. I think the idea of having a young and then older cast is really interesting. Here's my idea; Young G(a)linda - Kristen Bell (I know she's like 28 but she comes of as younger) older Glinda - Reese Witherspoon Young Elphaba - ? Older Elphaba - Anne Hathaway Young Fieyro - Zac Efron Older Fieyro - James Marsden

And I love Kristen and Idina but they are TOO OLD for the movie version. I'm sorry.

May I say Roserio Dawson?

Emmy Rosum might be able to sing Glinda but I kinda doubt she could act the role... she didn't exactly "wow" in Phantom.

toanythingtaboo 2: You're being a little too wary about Kristen Bell. She's not your typical actress-turned-singer: she can really sing and was also in the stage production of Reefer Madness.
Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!
Yup, Kristen Bell not only went to NYU's Tisch, but she also has done stage musicals from REEFER MADNESS to Sondheim's A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC. She also sang "Fame" at the Emmys and sang that "One Way or Another" song in VERONICA MARS. She is quite a talented singer, even if she is quite humble about it, and a wonderful stage actress (she was also on Broadway and talks extensively about the thrilling experience of getting notes by Arthur Miller himself). Bell's talents are not in question, I believe she might be one of the most talented actresses of her generation, but I just think she comes off as too smart, clever, and cynical for Glinda. Only time I've seen her play a Glinda-esque role was in REEFER MADNESS and she played the role always giving a wink to the audience and turning on the camp. Glinda has to be played by someone who can convincingly be an ingenue, as in, if this were a golden age role, Barbara Cook would have been cast in the stage show. Bell's persona is much more suited to Elphaba, she just might be too pretty for it.

I thought I heard somewhere that depending on when the movie is made, Kristin had dibs on Madame Morrible.
That being said, I like the idea of splitting up Elphaba and Glinda into two different actresses. However, if the movie is not made for another 5 years, since they probably will want to wait until the hype dies down a bit, Kristin will be almost 45. If they do the older Glinda/younger Glinda, then I can see Kristin being the older Glinda.
I think Kristin is far more likely to be cast than Idina, however because Kristin is more of a name to the general public. I think it's unlikely for both of them to return, but it could happen depending on who's cast and how they want to structure the movie.
I'm not saying Kristen Bell is at all bad, she's pretty good.
However, being a good singer and being able to sing a certain part...are completely different.
It will be AWFUL if whoever they pick can't belt out No One Mourns The Wicked.
If they go with the character, split actresses idea...it would solve this problem simply.
Cheno would easily sing the more demanding Glinda numbers, and is a reasonably well known name...then the young G(a)linda can be played by some 'name' who has a decent voice, but isn't required to be outstanding.
Look wise, Hayden Panetierre could be a young Glinda. She can sing and plays into that 'Popular' persona well. She also does have the ability to be funny, which will be kind of essential for a non cringe worthy performance.
Having the younger and older concept is actually a very good way of dealing with casting. Gives the opportunity for the OBC to return which will please the (majority) of fans and gives a nod to the production. Also, in this case Cheno and Idina are reasonably well known names these days.
Twice the cast listing can only benefit the film, no?
I agree that they could bring back Kristen for older Glinda.... actually I really like that idea! I really hope this movie does happen because Wicked is one of those shows that (I feel) would translate well to the big screen.
