Yes, I know there is a similar thread already, however, everyone on there QUICKLY ignored the topic and switched to spanish language movies instead.
Now, besides El Fantasma de La Opera, Mame, Gypsy, Expreso Astral (huge piece of crap.), The Baker's Wife and Cats, what other MEXICAN cast recordings are there,.
I am not interested in recording from Argentina, Madrid or Colombia. I am only interesetd in Mexican cast recordings. The ones listed above are the only ones I have knowledge of.
Real help (and NOT a contest of who can be as *****y or put out as possible at the mere existence of the thread) appreciated.
There are a surprising number of official Mexican cast recordings considering musical theatre was not too long ago (late 70's/early 80's) a very unknown art form in Mexico. Almost immediately, Broadway scale productions of musicals, both popular and lesser known, began proliferating across the capital with an LP of selections in the early days, and more complete recordings recently, preserving their casts.
As a long time Les Mis nut, I was ecstatic when the show opened in Mexico City for a nice two year run and there was much hype over the cast recording in the press.
Sadly, it never came to fruition. Apparently Cammack was so angered over the very open sale of studio quality soundboards of the whole show right outside the theatre, he pulled the rights and denied production of the album. I read this myself in a major Mexican newspaper article at the time, so it isn't a rumor. Not that I blame him, but I was understandably crushed by that decision. Now, unless my Spanish is so rusty I got the wrong idea, but I seriously doubt it, lol.
Yes, there is an official Evita cast recording but it's out-of-print and was never released on CD. It's a strangely enticing recording, even if it has these vocal and orchestral kinks that most would readily perceive as flaws or discordant in nature, but are very typical of live performances (although some of it is obviously due to warping of the actual LP disc, at least in my copy). The orchestra itself is as large and full as the one on the Broadway cast recording but it has a decidedly quaint quality to it due to the way it is mixed and the musician noises usually filtered out of recordings being present. I remember sort of wanting to cringe at certain points at the rawness of it all, but it never actually causes one to. The official album contains virtually the same material as on the original Broadway/American Premiere cast recording. I love it.
There is an official A Chorus Line recording that I do NOT recommend. The vocals are so bad, you can tell they focused more on hiring dancers and ignored everything else. The orchestra is great but is bathed in reverb. The show just recently opened again in Mexico City and the cast sounded just as good as the recent Broadway revival cast did. I was hoping they'd record an official album but I haven't heard anything about it since it closed a year ago.
There is an official Gypsy cast recording starring famous Mexican actress Sylvia Pinal and her pop star daughter Alejandra Guzman. They have this crazy edginess to their voices that I love.
I made it a point to point out the above are official recordings because there are craploads of soundboards of their productions out there. Thank God. I have at least 3 versions of Les Mis. =P
Recreation of original John Cameron orchestration to "On My Own" by yours truly. Click player below to hear.
That website that chewy linked to lists a lot of bootlegs. From the offical recordings La Cage is GREAT (if you ever find it, listen to it). There are also Nunsense, JCS revival (really worth getting too) and They're Playing Our Song.
Listen, I don't take my clothes off for anyone, even if it is "artistic". - JANICE
Regarding the 2010 Mexican MAMMA MIA! -- technically, an 'official' cast recording was never released but there is a CD-quality soundboard recording that is easily available and sounds sensational.
If you listen to the official ACL recording, you will notice that "What I Did For Love" is sung by the same actress that plays Cassie. This is because the actress that was supposed to play Morales chose to audition for a more lucrative opportunity when the LP was recorded, so they had Olivia Bucio -who played Cassie sing the other song as well, since she was the best singer.
There are also official recordings of Fiddler on the Roof, My Fair Lady, Man of La Mancha, TWO different productions of Mame, both starring Silvia Pinal, Victor/Victoria, Cabaret, Can-Can,The Boyfriend, Sugar, Tom Sawyer, Carnival, Anything Goes,Jesus Christ Superstar, Annie Get Your Gun (again starring Silvia Pinal) and Irma la Douce, to mention the most relevant.
