I can see one show on a 8 hour layover next week - I'm struggling with what to choose - part of me wants to see Night Music but for the wrong reason - i.e. the performers not so much the rendition -

what would you do?

many thanks -

If you want to see Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury live, then definitely see it.

CZJ is out the week of the 16th though...

It's the music and I'm its hapless victim

I think it depends on many things: how often do you get to NY? what else are you considering? how important is seeing THEM?

Personally, I thought the show was very good, but not stupendous. If I could only see ONE show? This wouldn't be it.

But a whirlwind great way to see a show!

"If I could only see ONE show? This wouldn't be it. "

What would be?

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Tough call, actually.

Of what I've already seen? I'd reccommend N2N, methinks. So emotional, so intense, so one of a kind.

But I am careful with my recommendations and try to tailor them to the recipient.

Please note: I wouldn't advise AGAINST the show by any means.

I JUST saw it on Tuesday and thought it was GLORIOUS. It's not perfectly cast (IMHO), but Angela is NOT to be missed. CZJ is fine but not as comfortable in the genre as I expected. If you've never seen ALNM, I'd say GO FOR IT!
