Can't we just leave the "it was good"/"it was bad"/love/hate stuff already? Simply say some people loved it, some people hated it, etc, etc, and so forth. You know, everybody has opinions, opinions are subjective and all that jazz.

So it looks like this is going to suffer the fate of every other Rent movie thread...
Anyway, I agree that "Goodbye Love" would have improved the movie (which I still enjoyed), but I'm kind of indifferent about the ending issue. They're both fine, and I think that they went with the better of the two. It's not a make-or-break the movie decision between those two scenes.

BroadwayGirl, I want to appologize that I didn't finish our discussion last time. It is just that your suggestion about reading "Rent Bible" before discussing it scared me away. I have never heard such an idea that you have to understand a movie or a show based on some "Bible".

re: The RENT Bible... I think it can provide a better appreciation and understanding for all of the real events surrounding the show, but I don't think it would really influence your opinion of the movie in a big way. I mean, you can talk about being true to Jonathan's vision and everything, which is... I guess pretty well delineated in the book, but that's still even kind of a personal opinion, IMO, anyway.

I just want to know if I'm mistaken about Seasons of Love being out of character? I'd always thought/heard that for that scene, the actors were... well, not themselves, but not their characters in the show, either. From that perspective the alternate ending is kind of odd. It works on stage, I'm not crazy about it on film.

I really liked the alternate ending of RENT, but it really didn't have much as an emotional impact when they actually do it on stage. Angel came in at the middle of Finale B in the a-ending, but on stage, he comes in at the last minute, singing the last line with everyone else, which makes that extra powerful for me.
Not saying that I hate the original ending, because I love it too!

HEY BwayStar, how about you go somewhere else with your little rants about RENT beacuse none of us really wants to here want you think. And you are obviously a coward since you don't want anyone to see what you like. The music you like is probably tasteless anyways like your personality.(Probably haven't even watched the movie!) Besides if you just are going to come and talk sh*t about the movie, it's all on you!! It'll come back and bite you in the a$$ very soon, I promise. =)

Now I'm going to go out on a limb and say this:
DOn't you think your love for Rent is clouding your opinion of the film? Just slightly even? I like Rent in its original form well enough. It is a great story, with some songs that have potential to be a lot more. I don't think it is the bible and I don't think it is awful. The message is great, and I love the community it has built.
BUT- The film was not well recieved. Most critics were mixed to negative. The general public did not respond to a huge publicity push. A lot of people on this board, not just those who hate Rent, didn't care for the film. When you look at it with a naked eye, some of the flaws are obvious. What I see is a director who didn't always trust his source material.
So when you say nobody wants to hear the negative comments, that's not true. Really, if it were the piece of genius that many have claimed it to be, wouldn't it be more of a general opinon? Genius doesn't go unnoticed the way this film has. It is flawed. Stop trying to tear apart people who think so. Our opinons aren't far fetched.

I don't think the alternate ending would have saved the film. I think most movie audiences would have had a difficult time accepting that ending. It's a nice DVD extra to have, but that is one of the very few places where Columbus actually made the right decision.
I still contend that tremendous emotional integrity was lost with the cut of Goodbye Love.

I didn't feel that the alternate ending worked(this, I think, was actually the original ending). It removed you from the film completely. I also didn't like the way Wilson just sort of walked on the stage, almost as if he had simply missed his cue or something. I think the one that made it into the film was much better.

Sanda, I'm not sure what you're talking about. At the time of my post, I didn't even OWN the "Rent Bible." I still haven't even made my way through the whole thing. And I definitely don't recall ever suggesting that you needed to read it...I think I only asked if you were familiar with the actual show and not just the film.
BSO, I think you ARE the only person on this board who hasn't seen the film, lol.

It seems to me that when you make a movie out of a stage musical or play you have a responsiblity to create something that can't be done on stage. Otherwise what's the point? The entire movie could have carried better with this concept. It really didn't. Sure they took the action else where instead of using one unit set for the entire show, but that shouldn't qualify for making a movie. The whole thing could have been done a lot better.
As for the endings, the alternate wouldn't have saved the film. That's very ridiculous to say. The movie was seriously flawed and the other ending wouldn't have mattered much either way. As others stated it would just have been confusing.
