Posted: 10/18/06 at 11:24amI loved Lauren Molina, and I would like to see her take the part. I'm actually starting to hope that this whole project gets scrapped. I mean I've always wanted a big screen version of Sweeney, but then Tim Burton became director, and I was worried , yet slightly intrigued. Then, Johnny Depp became Sweeney, and I'm not sure if I still even want to see the movie. Now, Carter is Mrs. Lovett. I like her as an actress, but she does not fit the role at all. Maybe if they dubbed the vocals she could have been a great Johanna.

Posted: 10/18/06 at 11:27amAh, interesting that you felt that way Rath. I am normally right there with you on the "warbling vocal sound" but for some reason Molina's performance really worked for me. I found myself watching her even when she wasn't the focus of the seen because she had such subtle nuances that really made the character more fascinating that it had ever been for me.

First, I loved Molina, but not her warbling...I found her to be very affective as Johanna.
Spider, that is what we do here at bww. Bitch, moan and worry about a favorite show be ruined as a film by poor choices. I am hoping that the whole thing is wonderful regardless...but am allowed to voice my concerns. It's a conversation we are having for cripes sake.
Michael Bennett, I agree with the fact that we should wait and see if the score is ruined here, and that scores are always altered for film. Again, I'm hoping it is a wonderful movie and represents the show well and doesnt disappoint. But it isnt as if great shows havent been ruined before by incorrect casting, poor direction, etc.

I think she's 23 or 24 and looks younger to me.
Not that I am necessarily advocating her being cast in the film, but I don't think she's too old for it.

Well Toby is 12 in that John Logan script unless Burton changes it...
And Johanna is 15. It actually says that in a piece of dialogue in the film script, so again, unless Burton makes a different decision, they would virtually have to cast an unknown to be age appropriate.

This already exists - with Hearn and Lansbury. Because that is the 'show' you mean.
What's being discussed here is a movie - albeit, inspired by the staged source material - but a seperate entity none-the-less. I don't believe it owes any fidelity to what's been done on stage at all. The announced artists so far are all veterans of the medium, and will presumably create a complete filmic vision inspired by the piece.
