I cannot wait to see John Travolta as Edna in the film with Billy Crystal as Wilbur!!

Well, that makes...um...ONE of you. I can't imagine a worse cast.

PEACE.

I agree Sueleen.
I would like to see Harvey as Edna otherwise Bruce Vilanch.
Travolta is sooooooooooooo sooooooooooooooo sooooooooooooo wrong.
If they are going for the church of Wacky why not Tom Cruise as Wilbur and Travolta as Edna. I WILL GAG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
L Ron Hubbard will be the only one pleased.
OY.
Not having Harvey as EDNA is CRIMINAL.
Marc Shaiman wont let that happen. The Church of L Ron Hubbard is oppossed to gay marriage and gay rights.
I do think Billy Crystal would be a perfect Wilbur.
John Travolta should be Corney Collins Updated On: 11/27/05 at 10:03 AM

I love it! I see it everytime im in NYC twice or more- it needs to come to London!

The score is just so beaty and happy - every number is huge and makes you want to sing and dance along too. The cast are so energetic they could light up times square with the electicity they display on stage! I just love it, and the cast are great atm, Penny is hilarious! So is Edna and her husband! and the Link is so gorgeous and have good presence on stage! Amber and her mother work perfectly together and do i need to mention the splendid lady who plays Motormouth, well she just brings down the house - got an ovation when she sung her song "I know where ive been" God that was brilliant really moved me and made the hairs on my back stand - fantastic

SEE IT NOW EVERYONE!

I'm probably being overly optamistic here, but I'd like to think that Travolta MIGHT do an excellent job as Edna. He has done some drag before- I think he played Barbara Streisand once on "Saturday Night Live". I don't know, if the producers of the film have faith in him, we might as well give it a chance.

Edna is NOT a drag role. It's just that the performer playing the role is male instead of female. There's a HUGE difference (no pun intended).

John Travolta should be Corney Collins

So it is okay for Travolta to play Corney Collins but not Edna? What kind of logic is that?

John Travolta should not be EDNA.
1. He might not do it because of his religion.
2. I think he would make a good Corney Collins
3. The role was originated by Harvey and no one except perhaps Vilanch is as funny. Travolta would SUCK. Just my opinion.
PS When I think of Travolta I think of him as a sex symbol (Grease etc) I just can't imagine him as EDNA TURNBLAD.
Harvey is the best. It makes me soooooooooooo mad.
@*#####@@@@!!!!!
Harvey as Edna- Vilanch as Wilbur. That's what I call casting. Updated On: 11/27/05 at 12:12 PM

Oh well. I can see Crystal as Wilbur.
I also think that Robin Williams and Crystal would work.
Williams was great as MRS DOUBTFIRE. re: Hairspray Love Thread ;-) ;-) ;-) Updated On: 11/27/05 at 12:44 PM

you know, to be honest, John Goodman still comes to mind as someone who would be an excellent Edna if Harvey couldn't do it

Corine, my point was not to discuss the casting of Travolta in the role of Edna, but his participation in the film AT ALL. If the creators feel that Scientology is a homophobic cult then why would casting him as Corney make any difference?

PEACE.

Hairspray is my drug. It's music brings sheer joy to anyone who experiences it. I have walked out of the theatre literally trembling with joy every time I have seen it. I would give anything to be part of that experience sometime in the future.
