Rosalind Russell's vocal range consisted of only 4 notes.
As Mama Rose in the movie of Gypsy, most of her songs were filled in by another actress. Despite this, small sections of what you hear is Rosalind actually singing (such as the simple title line of "Everything's Comin' Up Roses" which was lowered to coincide with her limited range).

Posted: 5/12/04 at 4:21pmOne of the things that makes the Roz Russell movie different from the show is the fact that in the show, June runs off with Tulsa- the boy that Louise has been pining after. When they made the movie, they felt that perhaps that would be too astonishing to a movie audience so they changed it and instead June runs off with Yonkers or someone else...that's why it's not so surprising in the movie. IMHO Roz Russell did a pretty good job. Oh, and Marni Nixon also did the voice over for Deborah Kerr when she sings in another movie...I can't remember which one....mighta been An Affair to Remember...but I DON'T remember :) Marni Nixon is amazing.

Marni Nixon dubbed the singing voice of Deborah Kerr in the film of THE KING AND I.
AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER isn't a musical, wonderful as it is.
To a kid growing up in Key West in 1962, the film version of GYPSY was B-R-O-A-D-W-A-Y. I loved it and saw it nearly every day of its initial 7-day run. I knew it before I knew the Broadway cast recording. From the vantage point of 2004 I believe Roz doesn't get enough credit for the performance created. She is funny and scary and determined. Her quasi-dubbed singing voice was fine then and its still OK to me now w. She always claimed it was her singing. Others say it was Lisa Kirk who did most of the singing. (I wasn't there so I have no inside information.) Either way the film works for me. Sure, in hindsight I would have preferred the Merm but life's not fair. Everyone does a fine job in my humble opinion.
One added remembrance. In a theatricl reissue a few years later I saw a print with the "Together Wherever We Go" number in place and intact.

The 'Together Wherever We Go" number is included as an outtake on the recently released DVD.
