Company: Being Alive (I know, I know...but for some reason it doesn't do anything for me....maybe it's because Sondheim was forced to rewrite his original ending song, which was much more pessimistic, for Hal Prince)
"One no longer loves one's insight enough once one communicates it."
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.
Wicked-Both of the Wizards songs. As much as I love Joel Grey, those songs are just so boring. Pippin-I Guess I'll Miss the Man Rent-The "Christmas Bells" songs
Wonderful Town: Ohio (I know thats like, something everyone loves) Jane Eyre: Forgiveness Wicked: Both songs done by the Wizard, plus Something Bad The Full Monty: Jeanette's Showbiz Number Follies: Ah, Paris!
..those are the only ones that stick out in my head from shows I really really liked (right now anyway)..coincidentally EpT, my favorite song in Les Mis is Drink With Me. I don't know why but everytime I see Les Mis I like it more and more.
Le Pouvoir (Roméo et Juliette - de la Haine à l'Amour) Prima Donna (The Phantom of the Opera) Gus, the Theatre Cat and Bustopher Jones (CATS) Ma Terre, J’ai Tout Perdu (Autant en Emporte le Vent) Both Joel Gray songs (WICKED)
I can't believe that "Jeanette's Showbiz Number" from The FM and "Another Pyramid" from Aida.... those both are such amazing numbers. Just because the supporting cast is given a number doesn't mean it sucks... watch Another Pyramid and it's dance break and John Hickock was phenomenal as Zoser, especially doing "Pyramid"... Jane Connell brought down the house with her number in the FM. What awful choices to nominate as worst songs... if you're going to pick bad numbers from these shows, try-- THERE ARE NONE. AIDA and FM both are virtually flawless scores.
And if she'll say, "My darling, I'm yours!" I'll throw away my striped tie and my best pressed tweed, all I really need is the girl...
now, i may be old-fashioned here but I was under the impression that people were entitled to have conflicting opinions. i personally love all of the FM score EXCEPT for "Jeanette's Showbiz Number". And I do love "Another Pyramid" but more because I love John Hicock's rendition, not because it's a well-written song. you never know what songs will occur differently to different folks. I may be one of the few people who hates Seasons of Love. you wanna talk perfect score? how about The Last 5 Years, though I'm sure many disagree.
"The last train out of any station will not be full of nice guys." - Dr. Hunter S. Thompson
"I wash my face, then drink beer, then I weep.
Say a prayer and induce insincere self-abuse,
till I'm fast asleep"- In Trousers
In response to BWayBoy88, about I Guess I'll Miss The Man. It depends on how the song is used in the show. The song is ok, but it adds a new depth to the song when used in the context the Fosse used it in the original version of Pippin. Which is why I like it.
whats with all the hatred of "wonderful" from wicked- its one of my favorite songs in the show
"Grease," the fourth revival of the season, is the worst show in the history of theater and represents an unparalleled assault on Western civilization and its values. - Michael Reidel
I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face from My Fair Lady. Very anticlimactic and dull song at such a pivotal moment in the show.
I agree with Drink With Me from Les Miserables. While it's a poignant and pretty song, but by that time, the show doesn't need any more slow ballads.
Dance With the Devil in The Witches of Eastwick was just too cheesy and didn't work. Mainly, it's the melody. Something more sinister, infectious and driving would be better.
If Only from Whistle Down the Wind. See Drink With Me above.
You Are My Home from the Scarlet Pimpernel always reminds me of a soft-rock radio station.
"What can you expect from a bunch of seitan worshippers?" - Reginald Tresilian
I agree w/ "I guess I'll miss the man" from Pippin "Little Lotte" POTO "Perfectly Nice" and "Slip of a Girl" from Jane Eyre ..Oh, and I kind of agree about "you are my home" but all the same, I LOVE that song :)
I don't like Wonderful or the other song from Wicked that the Wizard sings because I don't really find them enjoyable. Actually Sentimental Man bothers me because, whereas in other parts of the show (ie Dancing Through Life) there are small foreshadowings but Sentimental Man is literally like throwing in your face whats going to happen later on and I think they could have done that in a much more subtle manner.
And, AnothaPartofMe, you don't see me going around yelling at people that Drink With Me is the best song in Les Mis because Les Mis is flawless. Even though I may feel that way about the song, and think it shows the dynamic of the barricades very well, I'm letting other people have their own opinions so I would appreciate it if you did the same. Just because you think a score is flawless doesn't mean everyone else agrees. Besides, it has nothing to do with who is singing it, I just don't like the song. Let me not like it.
This has nothing to do with the thread, but I read little_sall's post and I had to comment. Don't Be the Bunny from URINETOWN is a CREEPY song. The first time I heard it it scared the crap out of me. Oy..
I have to agree with everyone on the Wizard's songs in WICKED. They are the most pointless songs ever created.
And about I'm Not Wearing Underwear Today, I like that song because it's so random. True, it's not the most articulate song ever written, and no, it doesn't do anything for the plot, but you gotta love Brian. Hehe. It's also the best song to sing in public places.
