@bjh2114 I completely agree Brantley even wrote an editorial on how he hates La Cage as a musical, but he still gave the most recent revival a positive review. Although I would say it would take more for a musical that he hates to impress him. It doesn't help that everyone was expecting Rogers to be a gift from god...considering even Broadway actresses have been saying she must be amazing if they waited all this time between productions....everyones expectations were her were as high as the notes she's supposed to hit, and when she can't hit those notes...its understandable that the critics didn't like her.
On another note...Godspell may actually nab a best revival nomination now since its reviews were universally luke warm..and so that people don't think I am a crazy Godspell Freak....Follies' name is currently being engraved in the statuette.
revival category will be: Porgy and Bess, Follies, JCS and Evita. with Porgy and Bess and Follies frontrunners. I predict Follies. My personal favorite is JCS but it has been so polarizing I can't see it going their way
I can't see this not getting nominated. To whoever said Godsepll would take the nomination over this, I can't see that happening. Does anyone think this ha a chance at winning best revival? I do and was wondering what others thought...

EVITA will be nominated. There's no chance Godspell would be nominated over Evita. If anything, Godspell and Superstar are competing for the fourth slot. Follies/Porgy and Bess are definitely the front runners but I actually wouldn't be shocked if Evita won, despite the reviews.

Why do people think Godspell stands an ice cube's chance in hell of being nominated? It was PANNED by the critics. By virtue of having like 3 really positive reviews tonight, Evita already has better notices than Godspell. Bwaybby has the category right, though I think Porgy and Bess might take the award.
Why they just didn't bring back Hal Prince's production is beyond me. They could have aged blind casted this with Caroline O Connor, who would have acted, sang and danced this with enough power to light up Broadway!
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist.
Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino.
This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more.

"I have two words for why the revival of Evita will probably stick around a while: Ricky Martin. There’s not another compelling reason to go, and even Martin, a superstar of American-Latin pop with great looks and a winning smile, doesn’t snugly fit into the notion of compelling. He sings appealingly and dances very well, but the accent he uses comes and goes, his smiley interpretation of the show’s truth-telling narrator is devoid of irony, and he plays the role without generating heat.
...
Put it all together and we get a sort of Evita Bland. It’s bad enough that the musical merely reports on Evita’s many sides — divisive, pragmatic to a fault, glamorous, out clearly for herself, yet a voice for labor and the poor — but doesn’t show them convincingly. Worse, then, that the production has its own set of disappointments."
Patti would not do it again... She didn't have fun the first time around!

when i said Godspell could be nominated I did not mean over Evita...I meant over Jesus Christ Superstar....but since Evita is mixed it means there is an actual "race" for nominations...though I agree Evita will definitely get a nomination...its reviews aren't Promises Promises bad..but they aren't "How to Succeed" good..well decent either...but let it be known I did not mean that Godspell would be receive a nomination over Evita only that with both ALW revivals being mixed Godspell may be able to get the lets not inflate ALW ego more than it already is
I honestly do not think these reviews are that terrible... I just broke everything down based on we classified the reviews on here...
Positive 4 Mixed to Positive 3 Mixed 2 Mixed to Negative 2 Negative 3
I went through the entire threaded and added up what was classified... I did not make these numbers up. I would not write this show off yet. I can see it taking home some Tonys.

^Brantley operates that website that labeled his review as "on the fence."
Ummmm...no he doesn't? Ken Davenport's office operates DidHeLikeIt.com.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Patti LuPone didn't like the first time around, but claims she could sing it better now. Given the chance, I think she would still sing through the score at a benefit or something.
