I'm originally from Denver, and DCA hasn't had this good of a line up in many, many years. Why did I have to move away, WHY!
"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert
"I never had theatre producers run after me. Some people want to make more Broadway shows out of movies. But Elliot and I aren't going to do Batman: The Musical." - Julie Taymor 1999
Ah, this makes me feel better! I was so sad to read Bebe was coming back to Chicago, because I just moved from NYC to Colorado... This is a nice treat!
If Lincoln were alive today, do you think he'd be pleased with his tunnel?
Isnt he a bit... uhm... hardcore intellectual for this? I mean, the man is an amazing designer, but his style is very high concept... not to mention outrageously expensive to build.
But if you think about it, he is actually a better choice than he may first appear to be. As stated in the article, it is undeniable that his sets have an almost infinite scope and seem to be a never-ending world that extends well past the stage in all directions. Also, lately he has been utilizing a lot of glass, and other transparent materials, sculptural elements in his sets, which would be perfect for an underwater world. Also, he uses a lot of mechanized elements, which a budget like Disney can afford and likes to utilize for the wow factor. A lot of thie creative team stems from the opera world, so this could be a very interesting project

ps...I was just at your website yesterday trying to figure out if you have posted and recent set designs

Dont misunderstand; I love Tsypin's work. His book The Black Box Factory is one of the best out there as a published portfolio. Yes, he has a very different sense of space, which could play well. But he's also a very heavy designer: lightness of touch is not his forte, as he will be the first to admit. I think that;s why he surprises me as a choice for this -- it would be like asking Zefferelli to design The Fantasticks.
This should be fascinating.
No, I havent updated the site in a while. The DON GIOVANNI is probably the most recent thing up there, and that was designed last spring. We're now in the completion stage of it for an October opening at Taconic. And I'm wrapping up an early-60s take on SCAPINO (both sets and costumes this time around) that's been a blast to research: everything has this Jacques Demy feel about it. But because it's part of a competition in November, I cant put it on the site just yet.
But thanks for letting me know you were there. That means a lot.
I'm so over movie-to-stage adaptations, but this is really exciting! My favorite Disney movie ever (and that's saying a lot).
I'm sorry to bore everyone with even more casting speculations, but wouldn't it be just TOO fabulous if Jennifer Holliday played Ursula? Seriously, (and I'm not trying to be rude) in pictures and videos I've seen of her she really does remind me of Ursula.
And I've said it before, but Katherine McPhee for Ariel! I dunno why that seems like such a good idea to me.
Ursula has already been cast. That character is going to be a puppet and the voice of her will be the same person who did it in the film.

Yawn....another Disney theme park/cruise show that will probably be cast with game show contestants. So much for new musicals.
