CRP,
I have to say I also agree with Jack. Superstardom is a "majority rules" thing. If not then every talented person on this earth would be a superstar. And we all know that is something that is aspired by many but achieved by a very miniscule select few. Updated On: 4/16/04 at 07:24 PM

Maybe this will help out things into perspective..... if you took all of the salaries of all of the supposed Broadway *superstars*, even the overpaid ones, and lumped them together for an entire run of a show, it still wouldn't come close to the 10 million plus per pic that is a low ball figure of what real A-list *superstars* make for a few months of filming some Gawd awful flick. Can anyone say, Cameron Diaz in "The sweetest thing"? And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

And chances are that if Deborah Cox were a superstar she wouldn't be the 4th or 5th replacement on Aida. Are there any superstars now on Broadway? I would say Hugh is coming close. Bernadette is a theater legend but not a superstar. Alfred Molina (usually fine actor) also not a superstar. Deborah Cox NOT a superstar.

Should I be concerned that I have no idea who Deborah Cox is, except for the fact that she is the current "Aida"?

No you shouldn't be concerned. Deborah Cox is a singer with some following in the clubs. Club goers, circuit boys, and some others are fans. She is really good in Aida however.

It's quite unfortunate how so few of you can see how subjective the term 'superstar' is. Thankfully, I need not conform to the majority opinion for validation.

Okaaaaay back on topic...

Does anyone know if Deborah performed this past Thursday night? (April 15) My parents caught the show for the first time and said they didn't think it was Deborah although the Playbill didn't have any of those "creepy inserts" but that they found the Aida's voice to be sort of weak. This kind of surprised me because with all the comparisons btwn Heather and Deborah, I assumed that Deborah has a belter voice, no?

After I break this down for you guys - I truly hope I won't have to read anymore unfounded bullsh!t responses (i.e. 'majority rules'). re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re:

Per Merriam Webster:
Super: Very fine; excellent; over and above; exceeding a norm.
Star: an actor or actress playing the leading role; a brilliant performer.

**Please note that many of the terms used to define both 'super' and 'star' are SUBJECTIVE terms (i.e. excellent, norm, brilliant, etc). For those of you who have no clue what subjective means, please read on:

Per Merriam Webster:
Subjective: of relating to or constituting a subject; of, relating to, or arising within one's self or mind in contrast to what is outside.

C'mon, can I make it ANY EASIER for you to get the point??

CRP;
Either you are the most hard headed person ever or you just want to run this thread to death. We are not talking about what it says in a dictionary; but what the normal every day person percieves as a superstar.

CRP,
Dear; understand..... most people do not know who Deborah Cox is. You can quote as many dictionaries as you want. SHE IS NOT A SUPERSTAR. But as someone else pointed out; she probaly has never had as much written about her and she might be one after this never ending thread.

I also went to the Palace theater expecting to see deborah Cox. I do know who she is because I am a club goer . She is not a superstar. She has had a few dance hits but most people recognize the song and not the performer. And by the way; I went on a Tuesday night and she wasn't performing. And no one seemed to care. Definitely not a superstar.

Look, she's a star because she's, well starring in a major show, and has some name recognition outside of the the theater community. But is she a superstar? No- that title goes to the A-listers some of the previous posters named. As DAME said, Jackman is the closest thing Broadway has to a superstar right now, but even he isn't really there. He might be in a few years, but as of now...he's "just" a star.

When you use "superstar" to describe anyone you're a huge fan of, you're devaluing the word. Like the overuse of "genius," which is a pet peeve of mine.

Dame, Your last post was HILARIOUS!

TheaterMafia, you need a big hug.
What we're talking about is what defines a superstar - not merely how 'normal every day' people define it.

Some of you guys are walking contradictions. One minute you agree that the term superstar is subjective, the next minute you're rolling with 'the majority'. Funny - very funny.

Also, I've failed to realize that I'm arguing this subject on a board where the 'majority' of the 'normal every day' posters are not necessarily R&B listeners...so of course you won't know who the he!l Deborah Cox is - nor would you consider her a superstar.
My bad.

But hey - I'm game for running this thread up to a 1000 posts because some of these responses are quite entertaining...pointless, but entertaining nonetheless.

But a superstar is someone who transcends R & B, pop, film, tv, theater....
So you just proved my point.:)

This thread is going to be here long after the second ice age.

Look CRP, she can be YOUR superstar, the point we're making is that in the world outside of Broadwayworld...she's not and neither are Alice Ripley, Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenoweth, Audra McDonald, Marissa Winokur (yes, even she's NOT a household name), Emily Skinner, Orfeh, Heather Headley, Lillias White, etc... All of them wonderful, all of the above mentioned, have originated roles on B'way, some of them have sold records to the masses, all of them have signed hundreds, if not thousands of autographs, some even have Tony's.. Are ANY of these women household names in China, a' la Madonna, Mariah Carey, et al, no. Are they more *famous* than your average Nurse/lawyer/student/doctor/casting director/struggling actor...YES, but hardly, "Superstars".

This thread is only pointless, crp, because your mind can't be changed, can it? My roommate insists 'apricot' is pronounced with a long 'a', too. Her steadfast belief in that pronunciation doesn't make her correct.
