The purpose of including the denotative meaning was simply to prove that she does indeed fit the definition. The definition you've chosen to back is merely a connotative one.
COMMONSENSE would tell you that 'popularity' is a purely RELATIVE term. I, and millions of others, consider Deborah Cox a superstar.
And please, elaborate on my 'obsession' with Deborah Cox. Just as you would like to argue that i'm obsessed with supporting Deborah, I could argue that you're obsessed with tearing her down...afterall, I find your negative responses in almost all of the Deborah Cox related threads on this site.
Crp, really, this is too much. she's not a superstar, that's a fact. Get over it and move on. Is she still employed at the Palace theater? than who the hell cares what either ONE of us thinks about her? It's not making us any richer, and she's not selling any more records based on the amount of posts on this or any other thread on any message board. JEEZ!
Would it kill you to agree to the fact that there is more than one level/degree of superstardom? I get the feeling that it's almost painful for you to speak 'in support of' Deborah Cox. It's all good though - I love you still. xoxo
Right back at ya. And if you read many any of my other "rants" you know i'm the first person to dissect the deegrees of *fame*. It's all very subjective.
" A superstar is someone who has household name recognition all over the world. Think, Madonna, Tom Cruise, Britney Spears (there's no accounting for taste). I sincerely doubt that Deborah is in that league. Which is not to say she's not deserving of such *status*, it's just that she doesn't have it, no matter how much you want her to. Being a well-known club diva, which is absolutely what she is, does not make her a "superstar". "
Well the world must be coming to an end because I agree with Al Dente 1000 percent.
And in this case, majority rules - and the "majority" doesn't consider Ms. Cox a SUPERstar.
The two most common elements in the universe are hydrogen and stupidity -- Harlan Ellison.
So we have established; Deborah Cox is not a superstar. She is a club diva with a following, doing a stint on broadway in Aida, and only doing 6 shows a week . Has this discussion come to a end? Have we learned anything?

I am not a hater. First of all if you read carefully you will notice I like Deborah Cox. Loved her in Aida, love her music and have seen her perform live at two Palm Springs white partys. She is still not what we would call a supertsar, and she is still only doing 6 shows a week ( which is the original discussion of this thread). Glad you enjoy Deborah Cox. :)

What we've ESTABLISHED is that there are different levels of SuperStardom. This means that while there may be some that feel Deborah is not a superstar, there are others who feel she is.
Personally, I think this whole SuperStar debate should've ended with the Al Dente post that stated: "It's all very subjective."
Not when someone is calling me a hater. And I also think theres stardom and what you call superstardom. Madonna, Cher, Placido, Prince, Streisand, Juila Roberts, all examples of superstardom. Their names recognizable anywhere. Deborah Cox, Amber, Michele weeks , NOT SUPERSTARS.

It is all very subjective however, you go to Istanbul and say the name "Madonna" and everyone knows who you're talking about. You go as close to home as Los Angeles or Miami and the vast majority is going to stare at you with a blank expression if you ask them to tell you who Kerry Butler and/or Kristin Chenoweth, Sutton Foster, et al, are. Those are girls that many on this board consider "superstars". It simply is not true. And just to make CRP happy, Deborah is MUCH more famous than all of the above mentioned. They definitley know her in miami.
Aldente; how true. How true. But you could try to explain it to some people here and then you realize that they are so far gone with their obsessions that they have their own reality. ( and they know Deborah Cox here in West Hollywood too ) :)

TheaterMafia- Of course Deborah's superstar status will be marginalized when you mention her with the likes of Madonna, Cher & Prince - these artists have been around for DECADES. And who is Placido?
Al Dente- Very good points. Though I definitely consider Kristin & Idina to be superstars, the majority of people (outside of this board) would recognize the name Deborah Cox before either Kristin or Idina. In other words, I believe superstar status is also dependent upon context.
PLACIDO DOMINGO. Anyway; you just refuse to understand what I am trying to say. SO forget it. You like Deborah Cox. I like Deborah Cox. Enjoy.

This isn't about me having to 'understand' anything - we just simply disagree on what defines a superstar...it's really no big deal.
And thank you for introducing me to Placido Domingo. being that I had NO IDEA who he was, I can't possibly consider him a 'superstar' - however, i see that you do. From what I've read, he's said to have "...the greatest tenor voice of his time..." I'm looking forward to hearing it.
Alright, kids. Everyone needs to calm down. Stop continuously quoting one another and take it outside. As to the topic, I don't mind Deborah Cox and I WAS aware that she now doesn't perform on those days. I went to see the show the weekend that I knew she wasn't going to be there (forgetting this fact) and when we got there I was surprised that her standby would be performing. However, I was excited because usually the standby or understudy is really and ACTOR and not just hired for their stardom in another venue. Her standby (Saycon Sengbloh) was AMAZING and I couldn't have asked for a better performance except from Heather Hedley who was able to see in the show almost three years ago. :)
