It debuts at number 8 on the Billboard 200 chart, the highest debut for a cast recording since Camelot in 1961, with 25,000 in sales and 29,000 combined sales and album equivalent units.

I heard from someone yesterday who said the songs on the album were too "earnest and sweet." It helps if you know that most of Evan's sincere ballads are lies. Then songs like "For Forever" and "If I Could Tell Her" take on a sad and vaguely creepy subtext.

I was surprised there wasn't a separate thread about this (unless I missed it -- don't shoot me).  I was fascinated by this story and the show's place in history.  The three prior recordings to crack the Top 10 in their debut weeks were Hair (different era, no comparison), Book of Mormon (lots of media coverage, plus Parker/Stone's mainstream crossover appeal), and....well, Hamilton.

I would classify the mainstream attention DEH has garnered so far as...mild to moderate? An EW or Vulture story here and there, and the obligatory late night/morning show appearances that most shows get.  Maybe on par with Waitress, if that?  So is it social media sending its popularity into the stratosphere?  Even as someone who loved the show, I was stunned and impressed by this showing.

Their choice to release Waving Through A Window early was extremely wise.  Several of my friends stumbled upon the song while listening to the radio and became instantly obsessed.  There was also a very strong word of mouth on DEH.  It's definitely become the hot new musical this season.  People were just really excited for the cast album.

Hamilton debuted at number 12 i thought?

^ Correct.  It debuted four spots lower than DEH. I'm not sure what that poster is talking about.

They probably got mixed up because Hamilton actually sold more copies in its first week than DEH did and still holds the record for most copies sold in a debut week since Rent. January/February is a notoriously quiet time for album releases, because of Grammy eligibility, and the popularity of buying music around Christmas. So DEH really benefited from when they chose to release. If it had been later in the year they would have probably debuted somewhere between #15 and #20.

The show seems to be one that sells well without gaining much mainstream attention at all. If I were to guess, I think it's more of a social media thing than a media in general thing, because of its largely teenage fanbase.

Sorry -- I meant the fourth to *reach* the top 10 in the last 50 years.  Per Playbill:

Dear Evan Hansen is also the fourth cast recording to reach the top 10 on the Billboard 200 in the last 50 years. The only cast albums to make the list previously were Hamilton, The Book of Mormon, and Hair.
