I have a dilemma and that is deciding which show to watch on May 1st.....Dirty Rotten Scoundrel Tour in San Jose or the Rent Non-equity tour in Fresno?
They are both on the same day and time and too bad...I cannot be at 2 different places at the same time :P
I am a big Renthead...so I wouldn't mind watching it again "Live" for the 3rd time but it will be about 200 miles away from me while the DRS is gonna be my first time and only just around my area at 50 mi away :)
I am really torn......what do you think?
Stay with something familiar or see something different?
I read from reviews that the DRS tour is less energetic but then...I don't really know what to expect. I might pick up the cast recording tomorrow to give me an idea.

Posted: 4/28/07 at 8:08amI really love RENT, but I like seeing different shows too, so if it's gonna be your first time seeing it, you should go to DRS. I saw the tour in Baltimore and it's hilarious and lots of fun to watch, so that's my suggestion.

Both shows are near and dear to my heart, but as RENT is stil on Broadway and you haven't seen DRS, go see DRS

This is DRS' final shot to perform, if you don't see it now, you never will.
RENT will be around for some more time and you'll always have the option to see it then

If you had seen both, I'd say Rent hands down. I haven't seen the tour but people on here have been saying that its in better shape than the Broadway production currently is. I saw the DRS tour in Boston and was quite underwhelmed. The new opening number is disappointing and I didn't like the male leads (although the women playing Christine and especially Jolene were top notch...Page Pardy was my favorite Jolene of the three that I saw). With all of that said, DRS is really a great show and even though the men (especially DB Bonds as Freddy), the show is still terrific and a ton of fun to see, especially if you have nothing to compare it to. (I saw it with two other people who saw it on Broadway and one who had never been before and the one who went into it fresh enjoyed it a lot more than the rest of us.)
In this case, I say go for the closer show which you have never seen. It is not a show to pass up, especially if you have seen Rent before. I have a feeling that you'll have more chances to see Rent again than you will to see DRS.
Whatever happened to class?

Posted: 4/28/07 at 10:55amI just saw the Rent tour last weekend in Akron and it was pretty miserable. Go see DRS. It was my third time seeing it live and by far the worst I've seen. When Joann is the standout in a production of rent the show clearly missed something (she was excellent though)

Posted: 4/28/07 at 3:31pmYou won't be disappointed. I've seen both the tour of Rent, and I just saw DRS in Salt Lake last night, and DRS' production quality is so much higher than the current tour of Rent. You will really enjoy yourself.

What's your favorite part of the DRS and what song really entertained you? Is it mostly comedy or are there any "drama" involved?
Depending on my mood....I like drama but then in Chicago the musical...I enjoyed the mix in the show coz at times...it could make you cry and most of the time...make you laugh your donkey off!

Interesting you should have this dilemma. I actually saw both tours in the span of 2 days in Baltimore in December.
Go see DRS. It is hands-down a better tour than Rent, which is absolutely horrible right now.

Posted: 4/28/07 at 6:03pmDRS, no question! I love Rent, but it tours every year. Who knows if DRS will tour again anytime soon. Plus I saw the touring cast and they are very good! Not as good as Norbert and Jonathon Pryce, but damn they can make you laugh!

is it really advisable to hear the cast recording first to enjoy it live?
My experiences were mixed because at times when I hear the cast recording first...I ended up enjoying it since I get familiarity with the material....
but with jesus Christ Superstar...I was disappointed because I enjoyed the Australian Movie so much...the farewell tour disappointed me.

I'd say try DRS out. It's a good show :).
And that video kind of upsets me...they're advertising NORBERT LEO BUTZ at the IMPERIAL THEATER...and neither of those things are even related to DRS anymore. Very misleading.

thanks for the input! I definitely enjoyed DRS on tour and I saw the opening here in San Jose!!! I was actually debating last minute whether to see RENT instead but I stuck to my instinct and saw DRS! What a wonderful and refreshingly hilarious musical comedy that is!

I greatly enjoyed the show and since I am fairly new into theater (started watching avidly last year)I don't have much in my "repertoire" but I enjoy each time I go for new stage experiences that I get.
I enjoyed the elegant set of the DRS tour and the cast is amazing! I watched the show without any idea on what to expect since I havent heard the cast recording nor seen the movie except for some review and pics that I read from here.

The 3 main cast were wonderful and I enjoyed Bond and Duncan's powerful voice. The person who played the Oil Heiress was also powerful and I just couldn't imagine all the strain she put in her voice producing that fake "harsh" texan accent!
I enjoyed the love song inside the hotel when Jeffrey finally stood up :P
Overall...it was a magnificent experience and it will definitely bring me back for more shows to come specially Beauty and the Beast, Cabaret and Little Shop of Horrors.
I don't know about Guys and Dolls....kinds sounds too gay but if I do my research and end up liking it...I might also see it...depending on my time and budget :P
I am disappointed they didn't have merchandise.
