And according to the vote, Constantine has more supportive fans out there to vote for him than the other contestants had. For that, he is the star of the year. There was no criteria, just a judge of fan-power. And if he has such strong support from theatre goers, than he deserves it. :0)
Why so much hate? He's paid his dues. He's quite talented. Heck, he was nominated for a Tony. He loves Broadway and the Broadway community. He supports a lot of charities. He's a good guy who loves his family.
Jekyll & Hyde back on Broadway! / Rock of Ages - 5 Tony nominations! Awesome!
Broadway shows are closing left and right, but Rock of Ages, is hanging in there... thanks in part to Constantine Maroulis.
He is probably one of the hardest-working Broadway actors out there. As Blue said, he loves the Great White Way, he gives back to numerous charities including many Broadway-based ones, he stage doors for his fans...
That you can't appreciate him because he's not Angela Lansbury, is your problem.
Aglurghh, I liked him on American Idol, but I still don't see him as a 'Broadway Star' despite his credits, so seeing a whole page full of his face felt like a bizarre, surreal dream.

Angela Lansbury is a star- she has been for some time. This was Constantine's year.
There shouldn't be such a thing as "Constantine's year". There is a countless number of people who should have been recognized before him. Not JUST Angela, Alice, and Gavin.
>>>There is a countless number of people who should have been recognized before him.
This was a fan poll. Their fans should have voted.
Angela lansbury and Alice Ripley have a Tony award- they were recognized. I don't remember who else was in the poll. Constantine is a talented, amazing performer, he got the most votes- he won. :)
As far as there should be no such thing as Constantine's year, he's a mostly well-liked performer who happens to be headlining the surprise breakout show of the year. Is your complaint that he's on Broadway, that Rock of Ages isn't Broadway material, or what? Because otherwise, giving the award to the hot new blood who's heading the hot new show makes a lot of sense.

Have you even seen ROA? I didn't like him on AI, but when I saw how good he was in ROA, I changed my mind.
Jane, no I haven't. I do have the cast recording and enjoy it, but I guess it's just that I wouldn't think of him as THE star of the year. But a page full of anyone's face would probably nauseate me. I don't think he's ugly, either...

I remember reading about a year and a half ago all the laughing and mocking about a kareoke musical of butt rock songs from the 80s starting off broadway, and how it will be closed in two weeks.
Constantine took the risk and originated this role despite the fact that it could have easily been a total flop. He helped make the show a hit. His singing is great night after night despite the difficulty of these rock ballads. Ask Amy Spanger.
i think even Constantine would admit that amongst the people he was up against for this that his fans (who are surprisingly mighty) pulled off an upset. Constantine has done a great job this year with his show and should feel good about the work he has done. As for the rest of us... who cares!? it's broadway.com. Alice Ripley and Angela Lansbury will be just fine and I imagine will be able to find work after this horrible injustice.
Constantine is starring in a hit show on Broadway so how is he not a "Broadway Star"? He's amazingly talented and just as deserving of the title as any of the others who were in the running. Fans didn't get his name submitted for this poll - Broadway.com put him in there with Angela, Hugh and the others. I guess they see him as a star - smart people.
Based on this tweet from Constantine, he was pretty humbled to be included: "jus flattered to be mentioned with all those fine actors. Good for @gavincreel 2! Us not so famous guys gettin in! 12:07 PM Dec 12th
I can't believe people are this worked up over a stupid Broadway.com poll which means absolutely nothing. He won because his fans spent a lot of time in front of a computer voting, probably multiple times.
Not really. He looks like someone you would find in the bushes outside your house...
That's exactly how I feel about it. I'm sure he's a perfectly nice guy but there's something about him that just kinda skeeves me out.
Why so much hate?
I think a good deal of it stems from the fact that many of us didn't even know anything about this until Constantine had been announced as the winner. We didn't have the opportunity to vote and have our say. Usually when a "contest" like this is going on there are items in the news feed here on BWW as well as a thread or two. I don't recall seeing any of that and based on the reactions of others in this thread I'm not alone. The way it was handled gives it a "behind closed doors" feeling

We must have different Gods. My God said "do to others what you would have them do to you". Your God seems to have said "My Way or the Highway".
In all seriousness this is probably just a case of poor marketing.
