for those criticizing performances, what you have seen is rehearsal -- this was filmed a few weeks ago...of course it's not yet performance ready.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

Posted: 11/29/13 at 12:16pmI DVR'd the making of the SOM and watching it now. This makes me want to watch it more and I'm getting very excited. Interesting that the girl playing Liesl is not a MT major in college. Rolf does look much older than he should but I will live with that. It was fun watching the kids get their casting calls! Carrie definitely has a gorgeous voice.

Posted: 11/29/13 at 12:22pmOh sorry, I wasn't aiming to criticize. Just stating observations really. They are rehearsal clips, so of course it's not going to be perfect (although that Do Re Mi clip is pretty darn close to perfection). Didn't mean for it to come off that way.

Why I like that she is not majoring in MT is because on college confidential, there are so many people who make such a big deal out of ranking college programs or feeling like they have to be accepted into what they think are the top MT programs but the fact is, if you have talent- you have talent! You don't have to major in MT to prove that you are dedicated to your craft because there are so many experiences you will get out of college that can contribute to a successful career in the entertainment industry. She is obviously very talented and very engaging.

It would seem that one of the production's child wranglers has been reading these boards.
She seems to dispute that there have been four dress runs and pre-filmed scenes. (Audra McDonald retweeted the tweet.)

Unless things have changed recently, Barnard and Columbia College don't offer majors in theater, musical or otherwise. The third undergrad school at Columbia, The School of General Studies, does offer a theater degree in conjunction with the School of the Arts, but it is heavily liberal arts in nature.
"Conservatory" classes and programs are not consistent with Columbia's philosophy (although they used to offer a couple of classes in acting because--after much debate--they decided that actors study text as carefully as any English major).
The moral here for young people wanting to study in NYC (or LA, for that matter, as UCLA has a similar philosophy, though not so strict) is that you don't have to MAJOR in musical theater. You can go to college in NYC, get a good education, and simultaneously take practical classes elsewhere. Columbia didn't offer playwriting to undergrads when I was there, so I took relatively inexpensive playwriting classes at the New School while enrolled and studying sociology, comparative religion, French, etc., uptown.

I watched the special also and got very eager to see it. It looked like the entire orchestra from Cinderella was there - plus extras..so it is sure to sound great.
It did look like when the kids entered the actual set for the first time there were more in the group than the actual kids who were cast. I bet all the children have understudies just in case someone unexpectedly gets sick last minute as kids do..
If Carrie Underwood gets sick however, with one live performance...well, I hope they are all taking really good care of themselves.
A one shot night..yikes. I am excited.

Now, at the time she may have agreed and that is why she retweeted it; however, we can not be positive of what her intentions may have been when she did that. In any case, she currently appears to be happy with Carrie's performance. If she was not she would either not say anything at all, or blast her with her own words on her social media site of choice.

I wouldn't say Marta is a dud, just painfully shy. It was kind of getting on my nerves watching her in the making of special, but I guess she'll loosen up by Thursday. As for Freidrich, I'm just going to say those clips were from rehearsals when the kids were still trying to get used to dancing on set. I think he'll be fine by Thursday. I do agree that Gretl and Liesl were the best out of all 7 of them from the clips we've seen.
As for Laura, she retweeted someone pretty much saying that Carrie Underwood was wrong for Maria when the casting was first announced. I guess she's eating her words now?
bubba7753, if you're referring to Rolf being too old for the role, I think I read something stating a relative was part of production or something. I think a makeup artist for the show?

Yes, I remember reading that Rolf was related to someone working some aspect of the show. He was called in form Pittsburgh to audition.
It's getting closer. I would imagine they are getting ready for an 8:00 PM run through in just over half an hour.
