My only question is why are they airing it on a Thursday night? Wouldn't it be competing with Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Grey's Anatomy, and Scandal?
Last I heard, Thursday night has the most TV viewers overall. Total viewership dips on Friday ("date night") and then grows steadily through the ensuing week.

Glee is on Thursday nights. I don't know if Glee will already be on sabbatical in December, but I think NBC wants this to compete with Glee.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Okay, seriously?
This is pretty god-awful. She looks like a Swiss Miss Coco ad. Or a Madame Alexander doll dressed as Maria. Could her sleeves be any more starched and white? Could her hair and skin be anymore perfect? This Maria a strictly an indoor girl. Or maybe just a mannequin.
Really bad.
This makes the 1965 Fox movie look like a gritty independent documentary by comparison.
I think I just got a cavity from all the sugary sweetness in that ad and this photo.

I guess I'm too used to the movie, where they stopped trying to dress her like a doll.
Shots of the OBC also look pretty Swiss Miss. But it's hard to go back to that after the film.

I would hope that the conversation Mary and Alice had overlooking the agreement, etc., went like this...
MARY: They wanna do SOUND OF MUSIC with that girl who sings about Jesus and the wheel.
ALICE: SOUND OF MUSIC...not CAROUSEL, not SOUTH PACIFIC...
MARY: Nope. I don't care. It's not like it's their best show.
ALICE: Certainly not.
MARY: I wouldn't let them do ALLEGRO with this woman, but SOUND OF MUSIC...
ALICE: Yeah.
MARY: And if Steve let that woman from CHICAGO do NIGHT MUSIC...
ALICE: Your father DID let Ann-Margaret do a remake of STATE FAIR.
MARY: Uh-huh. Sign?
ALICE: Sign.
I've come to this conclusion (for me, at least): It's THE SOUND OF MUSIC. If they had cast Barbara Cook or dug up Judy Garland and cast her as Maria for this TV special, I would probably laugh at all the horrible cliches and bad lead-ins in the book, and some of Hammerstein's pretty hackneyed lyrics. I'm not particularly "insulted" or upset because I don't particularly like the show.
I think it's wise they're doing it on TV though. If Zadan and Meron had come to Mary Rodgers' apartment suggested an American Idol star play eight shows a week in one of her father's beloved shows, she probably would have shown them the door. (Assuming that...maybe not...but I've met her. She's a lovely lady, but she takes R&H (and R in general) rather seriously.)
I'm just glad it's not Carrie Underwood and Taylor Hicks in CAROUSEL.

You know, just Googling around on The Sound of Music, I found out that one of the kids in the show originated three roles in three legendary musicals of the era.
Marilyn Rogers (also billed as Marilyn Siegel) originated Amaryllis in "The Music Man," Brigitta in "The Sound of Music" and Shprintze (one of Tevye's daughters) in Fiddler on the Roof.
She was Tony-nominated (along with the rest of the children) for The Sound of Music. That's a pretty amazing resume. I wonder why she isn't interviewed on this site or other Broadway-related sites or panels. I'll bet she has some great stories!
