Yeah, I hate holiday weekends. Something always closes Labor Day weekend, New Year's weekend, President's weekend, etc. because they're always followed by a dead couple of months.
"Hey little girls, look at all the men in shiny shirts and no wives!" - Jackie Hoffman, Xanadu, 19 Feb 2008
When it tours, will it play theatres that are the right size for this intimate show - or will it play 2000 - 3000 seat theatres that will ruin the experience?
Sad, but it is expected. Had a great run and recouped! Best wishes to the company!

It really depends on which theatres it books. Some touring houses are very large and can accomodate 3,000 people or more and others are fairly smaller 1,800 people or less.
We all knew this was coming, but it is still so disappointing.
Best of luck to this amazingly talented cast, and thanks for giving me one of the most profound and moving evenings I have ever experienced in a theater.

I think it will do a limited mini-tour - playing smaller venues, much as I believe the tours of TICK TICK BOOM and URINETOWN did. Perhaps LuPone and Cerveris will even reteam for a couple of stops.
I'm so sad to read that this wonderful show is closing although I suppose that nothing can run forever (do you hear me Phantom?). I'm glad my trip to NYC is at the end of August so I can see it again -- I already have one ticket, but perhaps I need to feign an illness to get out of a business dinner and see it twice. Cough cough wheeze sneeze -- yeah, I can already tell I won't be feeling well that night.
Much thanks to Ms. Lupone, Mr. Cerveris and the amazingly talented cast of Sweeney Todd for five (maybe six?) fun nights at the theater.
I'm sad about the closing, but at least now I have a tour to look forward to.
If Percy Blakeney were in Les Mis....
Percy: Sink me! If it isn't Javvurt!
Javert: Zsah-vair, it's pronounced Zsah-vair.
Pecry: But it's spelled J-A-V-E-R-T Javvurt.
Javert: Repeat after me Zsah...Zsah....
Percy: Oh! Zsa-Zsa! Like the Gabor sister! Well I personally have always prefered Eva.
Javert: (Looks for gun)
My favorite experience in over 25 years of going to Broadway! And Mama Mia continues to sell out... Life isn't fair! I agree. Life really isn't fair.
I hope that they tape the show and release it on DVD too, but its really doubtful, since there are already two productions of Sweeney Todd out on video.
It was going to happen. I am holding back my anger and frustration and focusing on how much I love the show and how great it is that we have a month to give it a proper send off.
It was certainly the best theatrical experience I have ever had. And I want to thank the whole cast for everything they have done for me.
What about "Great Performances"! I thought that was a no brainer...
To the powers that be: Please preserve this extraordinary, atypical and thoroughly entertaining production for any and all interested future viewers to experience. I hope a simple click over to netflix or amazon will one day allow us to bring Sweeney HOME. Let this show out of the Lincoln Center archives!
(BTW: I would think some rad filmmaker would have jumped at the chance by now to capture this paticular version of the show. Where are you Martin Scorcese and what are you doing for the next month?)
I would bet the cast actually knew several weeks ago but were probably unable to say anything. It also would not surprise me if the announcement of Patti and Michael's extension was just a publicity stunt to generate ticket sales.
It's much better for Doyle that COMPANY will not be competing and directly compared with SWEENEY.
There has always been the potential for a huge backlash against his work by people who are afraid his concept is going to somehow catch on and strip Broadway of it's orchestras. Absurd, but true.
And I think the proposed film version more than anything would keep this production from being taped.
