ZONEACE- I think Rock of Ages has a decent shot especially for a Best Musical nomination, Will it win? Hell no. However its a crowd pleaser, and I have a feeling it could help the telecast ratings, a channel surfer might stop for a Whitesnake song.

"Grease," the fourth revival of the season, is the worst show in the history of theater and represents an unparalleled assault on Western civilization and its values. - Michael Reidel

As far as predictions I think Martha Plimpton will be nominated and will win. She was a revelation as Gladys and committed 120% to that part. Plus she is well respected in the theatre community. I think Alice Ripley should be dusting the mantle off as well.

I'm pretty sure the orchestrations for Hair are ineligible. They are pretty much using the original orchestrations. I don't remember there being a ruling about its eligibility.

Also, remember that Stephen Oremus and Alex Lacamoire are attached to the 9 to 5 orchestrations along with Bruce Coughlin.

Can anyone confirm about Mackenzie Crook in SEAGULL?

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

my hope for the nominations is that Title of Show is well represented on the lists. I don't think that's going to happen - they were so early in the season and they're a small show with no tour scheduled. But wouldn't it be awesome? I wish Susan Blackwell and Heidi get nominated for best supporting, and I hope Hunter and Jeff get nominated for best book and best score. That would be a lovely day for all.

That still hasn't been explained...

I thought I remembered a few years ago where only 3 of 4 revivals got nominated and there was a huge uproar about the fourth not getting the nod, even though the slot was there?

My predictions and thoughts:

MUSICAL:
Billy Elliot
Next to Normal (why are some of you spelling this in all lowercase like reasons to be pretty?)
The other 2 positions are hard...if you go by quality of reviews, I think Rock of Ages and [title of show] should take the two spots. If you go by commercial appeal, it should be Shrek and 9 to 5. So I will predict one of each and say that Rock of Ages and Shrek take the final 2 spots (I know that guy at the Post says no one likes Shrek, but when you combine nominations from Drama Desk, OCC and Drama Leagues, Shrek got more noms than any other show this year...)

PLAY
God of Carnage
reasons to be pretty
Dividing the Estate
33 Variations
with American Plan possibly knocking 33V out (33V has received more noms than any new play so far this year with 10, AP a whopping 0 even though I remember their reviews being better than 33V)

REVIVAL OF A PLAY
wow...this category is so tough. I honestly feel that there are 11 shows that could possibly end up on this list on Tuesday...but I will go with...
Norman Conquests (the only for sure lock in my book...)
Joe Turner (to honor their ensemble...?)
Seagull
Blithe Spirit (which has more noms so far than any other play this year)
although I almost put in Exit the King, Mary Stuart and Waiting for Godot. Speed-the-Plow, Desire Under the Elms, All My Sons and Equus are distant possibilities as well I think...

ACTOR IN A MUSICAL
Billys
Creel
James
Barbour
Spencer
with the possibility of Cavenaugh knocking either of those last 2 out

ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL
Ripley
Janney
Hilty
Foster
Scaglione
with a possibility of Block knocking either of those last 2 out

ACTOR IN A PLAY
Rush
Sadoski
Esparza
Radcliffe
Lithgow
oooh, I feel like that was a bold prediction...Irwin could of course end up there instead of Lithgow. I also feel that Griffiths, Lane, Langella, Schreiber or Gandolfini could shake things up...

ACTRESS IN A PLAY
McTeer
Walter
Gugino
Thomas
Harden
the obvious possible replacements would be Fonda and Feldshuh with Wiest, Davis and Atkinson having an outside chance as well

Wow, this is hard...I'm going to have to stop there...

James Barbour WILL NOT be nominated for Best Actor. Not only do people still remember his horrible crimes, but his show was ripped apart by critics and closed half a year ago. And he didn't get spectacular raves either.

I thought I remembered a few years ago where only 3 of 4 revivals got nominated and there was a huge uproar about the fourth not getting the nod, even though the slot was there?

As far as I'm concerned for the category, if there are not enough productions to fill the category, then all eligible productions must be nominated.

As an alternative, if there are not enough revivals of plays and musicals in one season they could decide to put them all into one category, but that is certainly not the case this year.
