re: kristen chenoweth's performance tonight

that's interesting about Idina having a song in Enchanted because I recently read an interview with her about how she was asked to do the movie, and when she saw that her part didn't sing, she was flattered that they wanted her based on acting ability alone...

that's great Landladies, my boyfriend ended up having dinner with him after seeing the boy from Oz (somehow his dad knew someone who knew someone...etc) and he said he was the nicest, down to earth guy! My boyfriend was of course starstruck for the X-men factor, so he never really asked him about his love of theater:)

sort of off topic, but I saw her recently at a concert (she did a guest appearance in Family Guy's Seth Mcfarlane and Alex Borstein's concert for the writer's strike) and she looked amazing!

re: Rent vs. Spring Awakening

if you're going to compare rent and spring awakening purely on lyrical content, for every "think twice before you poo-poo it" and "I'll call, I hate the fall," there's always a chorus of "blah blah blah"s and....well...pretty much all the words to "Totally f*cked" which beat out rent in terms of corniness everytime.

i've said it before, but I am not a fan of songs in musicals that are purely there for internal monologues and not to progress the plot, or whatever excuse Sheik and Sater

I'm SOO glad Sherie's in this role...she's just fabulous, and ursula is such a great character. I think no matter how bad or good the reviews will be, the 11 year old girl in me will HAVE to see this!
re: Is it possible???? 10,000???

Winston, I'm curious what Broadway show you think 'only relies on tickets bought by locals'? The majority of the audience in any theatre in the city on any given night isn't made up of 'locals'. You're incredibly naive if you think that.

i agree...think about "Company." That show's main audience was locals, (a lot of them students who kept going back) and that still didn't save it.

re: Who thinks Aida was underrated?

for me, nothing could compare to Heather's performance. And Sherie was amazing- such great comic timing. I LOVED this musical when it was on broadway but in retrospect, it's definitely not great...but i think I was 18 or 19 when it was on broadway, and it was one of the first shows that really got me into musical theater.
re: 'Hairspray' Currently At 100% on Rotten Tomatoes

I saw the Ebert and Roeper review and while they both LOVED it, right at the end the guest critic of Entertainment Weekly said that Nikki Blonsky looks to be a breakout star similiar to Jennifer Hudson, except she won't win any awards. While I haven't seen the movie yet, I agree that I don't forsee it being nominated for any Academy Awards. Fingers crossed for a Golden Globe though!
re: 1st Audition Successes Insane Luck

Didn't Adam Pascal just show up to an audition fot RENT w/ no theater background/experience whatsoever just to "see what it's like"?

Pretty much- they loved him, but their biggest gripe was that he always sang with his eyes closed.

i'm so excited to see this movie!
re: Why do so many people hate......
 Jul 17 2007, 02:35:15 PM
I was excited to see this show, and at the end of it, my friend and I looked at each other and said "well, i'm a little scared to see just how much the new york times is going to rip it apart!" Imagine our shock when it got rave reviews. The show is overrated. The music is nice, the lyrics are COMPLETELY laughable, even going beyond the "blah blah blah" stuff...and some of the acting is like a high school play...probably because half the kids are of high school age or a little bit older. And

I have to say, I am very excited to see this...Even if the sets seem to be the focus, they've got some great talent in their cast (aka Sherie Rene Scott).
A 'borderline dreadful copy'?

re: Performers you didn't like but now love

I remember hearing Daphne Rubin-Vega sing "Without You" on the Rent cast recording not knowing who she or the show really was, and I was NOT impressed! Actually seeing her perform and understanding her role, I completely changed my mind.

On the other hand, I used to LOVE Julia Murney, and now her voice grates my nerves.
