Question to all the pianists out there: What was the hardest Broadway piece you've encountered?
 Oct 14 2013, 03:17:12 AM
At auditions, "Trouble in Tahiti".
In rehearsal, "Into the Woods", battle pieces in Les Mis
Commercial vocal selections, none really.

Book of Mormon

For something as important as Make-A-Wish, why don't you contact the production company to check their schedule? They may even be able to do something more, such as a backstage tour or meeting some of the cast.

pdjennings - Thanks for the review! It sounds excellent, although I just cannot imagine not having "The Story of Chess" in the story! (That doesn't mean I disagree with that choice.)

re: Bloopers in Broadway shows?

Opening weekend of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" in the West End, a ball fell in one of the opening scenes and Michael Ball had to run to retrieve it, to mild applause. He was very professional and matter-of-fact about it, I'm not sure many audience even noticed.

Okay, guys and dolls, time for a quiz! I want the name of the song, character who sings it, and the show. (Honor system... No googling of lyrics!)

(1) be a sports car, ice cream cone

(2) I ate four dozen eggs

(3) you're just a bagel

(4) salted meat I'm selling there, laddie

(5) my juicy rutabagas

(6) naked as a scalded chicken

(7) that hog head cheese

With Jerry Springer, Chicago has officially jumped the shark.
re: Moments in Shows that Made You Cry When You First Saw It
 Aug 16 2009, 03:13:49 AM
I love this thread! I've only cried twice in the theatre (from the show)...

In Ragtime, when Tateh and the Little Girl reunite on the train, singing "Gliding"... It hit unexpectedly close to home too suddenly.

In Titanic, when the Marion Thayer sings to her son "You and I are getting in the lifeboat / Father will be staying here awhile ...", then she sings "John", and John Thayer replies "Don't say it, I'll be fine / I'll collect you both tomorrow morning, / Y

re: Roles for female tenors?

Madbrian's daughter should take private voice training. She is not stuck in her voice, especially at 14, and you'd be surprised at what just a bit of power in her mix will do. This is something a choirmaster doesn't have time to work on in a group setting.

By the way, all the roles suggested except for Vera and Dolly require strong belts. Nellie has to reach a C (nice mix, not belted) at the end of "Wonderful Guy" and in her "Some Enchanted Evening" reprise and Nell Carter has a pretty

re: legally blonde--yes or no?
 Aug 16 2009, 02:22:31 AM
It seemed like the composers took "If You Were Gay" as the springboard for the "gay and European" song (cut time, beat, feel). Also, the organ part (don't remember where) sounded like, oh, track 23 (?) in "Mamma Mia". It's been awhile, so I don't remember what I thought I heard from "Hairspray"...
re: I need a new cast recording. Anyone willing to help me out?
 Aug 16 2009, 02:18:09 AM
Ragtime - gorgeous songs ("New Music", "Wheels of a Dream", "Back to Before")
Chicago - classic! ("All That Jazz", "Roxie", "Class", "Razzle Dazzle")
Titanic - very symphonic, beautiful ("We'll Meet Tomorrow", "There She Is")
Beauty and the Beast - Ashman/Menken and Rice/Menken are unbeatable ("Be Our Guest", "Human Again", "Home", "Me")

I've only heard the cast recording. It does a good job of giving the title a deeper meaning and I like the more three dimensional character of Emmett. However, the music is extremely derivative (you can hear parts lifted from "Avenue Q", "Hairspray", "Mamma Mia", etc.). Still, it is enjoyable and I would love to see it sometime!
re: Is Something Afoot?

Nope, no recording... Just wing it. The music shouldn't be too difficult to figure out. I played rehearsal piano for it and it was fun. Make sure they play it straight. Playing it campy kills the pacing.
re: The greatest line or lyric ever said/sung on a stage

"Chris arrived with me today" -- John in "Miss Saigon" (sob value)

"Celebrate sensation" -- El Gallo in "The Fantasticks"

"You've got to be taught to hate and fear" -- Joe in "South Pacific"

"You and I, we are both men of La Mancha" -- (paraphrased) Cervantes in "Man of La Mancha"

"Tomorrow belongs to me" -- youth in "Cabaret" (scare value)

"I could have danced all night / And still have begged for more" -- Eliza in "My Fair Lady" (best exuberance)
re: Ushering
 Nov 7 2004, 06:26:15 AM
To "suchclumsytime": Ushering gets old really quickly. As an audience member, you get the excitement of a show about to start, it's a special occasion for you, you've looked forward to it, etc. As an usher, you're constantly juggling programs, collecting tickets, and showing people to their seats. You are literally running from the door to the seat, running back, back and forth, back and forth. There are older people who need extra time to store their wheelchairs, kids not paying attention,

I've played pit piano for R/R in a college production. The music is very satisfying to play, especially the second "It's Not Too Late".
