Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 9/22/24

If you surveyed most producers, I bet they'd advocate for getting a show out on BTTF's schedule, even if it meant sacrificing a bit of the Broadway revenue.A lot of shows can't get a tour out for 1.5-2 years and sometimes buzz/interest has died by then. The BTTF schedule is easier said than done and only doable because it's a big branded property an

I guess I'm looking at this from the perspective that this is a unique fundraiser for two not for profit companies that desperately need additional revenue. Anybody begruding a not for profit for trying to  keep their head above water post pandemic is an a**hole.

That said, it would be nice if the steep ticket prices came with the ability for a tax write off.

People routinely pay over $1,000 for concert tickets for major artistis all the time. I understand th

What was the origin of Laurents directing the 1973 London production of GYPSY? Did the production originate with him always wanting to direct the show and then he brought on Stritch/Lansbury?

Same with the 1989 Tyne Daly revival –– how did Laurents and Tyne get involved? Was it Barry & Fran's idea to revive it, Arthur came with it, and they settled on Tyne?
"

Tyne Daly speaks about her casting in GYPSY in this YouTube clip.  Barry Brown (producer) and Arthur Laurents (director) did the Lansbury GYPSY. They wanted to do it again, but it was contingent on finding a suitable name for Rose. Daly says Brown first approached Liza Minnelli and Bette Midler, who weren't interested in doing the role on stage. They then saw Tyne Daly - a huge television star at the time - sing a dramatic song on Dolly Parton's short lived variety show and thought she'd be perfect.  Tyne speaks about working extensively with Julie Styne and Arthur Laurents on creating her performance, and still, the revival did an extensive national tour before coming to NYC, primarily to make money, and secondly to ensure Tyne was up to giving a Broadway calibre performance.

SUNSET BOULEVARD 2024 West End Cast Recording Thread
 Sep 20 2024, 12:19:56 PM

I'm not saying I  don't have a personal affinity for the score to SUNSET, but Jamie Lloyd's production makes it seem stronger than it actually is.  Part of that is because, in this staging, a substantial amount of the "Hollywood/ Joe-Betty" lyrics have been rewritten (for the better) and of course he cuts the afore mentioned two songs that have always been cringeworthy.  But in other instances, what he does with staging underscores and highlights the

Jamie Lloyd does everything in his power to distract us from the actual quality of the material, which is one of the reasons why his production is so brilliant.

If the name of a show is causing people to stop and ask what its about on a subway, it's doing it's job.  If they are asking 'what is a gay jamboree?" the title is doing its job.

Listen, I'm excited to see her in Sunset, but she takes herself way too seriously. Really weird vibes from the things she says.

Agreed, "the greatest thing to never happen to Broadway?" Someone has a high opinion of herself.

Oh for heavens sake- she’s attempting humour. Some of you take things way to seriously

The "grandiose" Morrible of the stage production would have read as total camp on film. Performances and moments have to be modulated to be appropriate for the medium of film. You would have preferred she scream the line like "No Wire Hangers Ever?" I think we should hold judgement on individual line readings until we see the actual scene.

STARLIGHT EXPRESS will return to London in 2024
 Jun 15 2024, 12:25:19 PM

As someone who saw and loved the original production, I have to say the look of this revival is really underwhelming comparatively.  The original was probably the pinnacle of 80s musical theatre excess and the designs of the sets and costumes were absolutely extraordinary and overwhelming spectacle. This sort of looks like they threw some ramps through the flex seating at the Playstation Theatre. I don't even recognize most of the songs in the mega mix. I wish ALW hadn't fel

Certainly this production can't be compared to other, more traditional stagings. If you are looking to be 'surprised' by the directorial take on the material, this may indeed be the incarnation for you.

Performances at the 2024 Tony Awards

I suspect that in addition to its expected straight play categoriy wins, STEREOPHONIC has a more than good shot at winning score, so from that perspective it makes sense to have it perform.

Robert Cary & Jonathan Tolins have adapted the book for this production. How does it compare to previous versions?Have they made any changes, textually or subtextually, related to Conrad's race? (this being smalltown America in the 50s...)

I think I caught a change of Kim's age in one of the song previews (21, instead of 15, which is smart and necessary).

Also looks like they do not include any of the "optional" licensed songs (the title song from the movie, Let's Settle Down, and A Mother Doesn't Matter Any More).

Changing Kim’s age to 21 from 15 or 16  is ridiculous and would completely change the show. It’s about “kids.”  Please tell me they haven’t tried to make this very 50s show woke.

Audra McDonald-led GYPSY for 2024-2025 Season!
 May 30 2024, 10:45:20 AM

I don't think it matters what the race was of the original Rose or Gypsy Rose Lee. I also think the script makes it clear that its a 'fable' and not a historically accurate portrait. I can understand those who question how they can play the script 'as written' if the creatives are interested in making Rose and Louise's unique experience as black women a central part of the narrative.  I suspect George Wolfe is too smart for that and will let whatever interesting s

Audra already has six Tony Awards and though I’m excited to see her do GYPSY, I also think there will be those who (like Bernadette) think she is miscast. I don’t think she is a slam dunk Tony winner for this.
