re: Watch Live--Grammy for Best Musical Show Album
 Feb 9 2009, 09:50:40 PM
9 to 5 may not be eligible since it will include "9 to 5" which was on the movie soundtrack and "Backwoods Barbie" which was on Dolly's album. Not sure about all the Grammy rules, but using Oscar rules it would be.

My guess is it won't be about Idina coming to see Audra's character about anything fertility related--too close to home for her and Taye. Though it would been fun to see her and Audra go head to head in an Eli Stone or Pushing Daisies style musical interlude.

Does anyone know if Kevin Kern is going back? I know he is leaving and Aaron Tevit is retuning to Wicked so he would be free right about then. Does seem like a bit of a demotion to go back to being ensemble and not even first cover on any good parts.
SF: Lincoln Center's South Pacific replaces Ever After
 Jan 27 2009, 03:26:47 PM
Yeeech, The SHN email reads:

"Lincoln Center Theater presents a new production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's prize-winning musical classic

Based on James Michener’s Pulitzer Prize winning book Tales of the South Pacific, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s SOUTH PACIFIC is set on a tropical island during World War II. The musical tells the sweeping romantic story of two couples -- US Navy nurse Nellie Forbush & French plantation owner Emile de Becque and Navy Airman Joe Cable & a young local native girl Liat -- and how their happiness is threatened by the realities of the war and by their own prejudices.

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s SOUTH PACIFIC premiered at the Majestic Theatre on April 7, 1949 and went on to enjoy a five year Broadway run winning countless awards including nine Tony Awards including Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Considered by many the finest musical ever written, the score’s songs include such musical theater classics as Some Enchanted Evening, Younger Than Springtime, Bali Ha’i, There is Nothin’ Like A Dame and A Wonderful Guy.

South Pacific replaces the previously announced pre-Broadway engagement of EVER AFTER, which has been indefinitely postponed."

The Wild Party (Lippa). ASAP.
re: Staying power of Phantom?
 Jan 27 2009, 03:49:20 AM
inick, by your logic Mamma Mia should also die out because it's all 1970s disco music.

Phantom's staying power came at first from the fact that when it first came out it had huge production values in comparison to other shows and was a spectacle which is what people want when shelling out money for the theater. Over time came to define the genre. Ask any standard non-MT savant the name of a musical and they will name Phantom (or some other ALW piece).

The Drowsy Chaperone, my own fault, I detested the musical so owning the cast recording seems foolish.

Resizing shows is also not unheard of. I just have a hard time seeing them giving up the Curran with SHN needing at least one largeish theater for touring productions (and the Curran is closer to reputable hotels and restaurants, which is good for the touring companies).

Likewise you are forgetting the thing that most recommends the Golden Gate--proximity to the 24 hr. Check N Go, cash is a must for those window cards.

Also has anyone else noticed the bizarre semi re-painti

Tendernob! Haha I LOVE it! I love how people are calling it Lower Nob Hill. Why not NOMA?

I just thought it was a bit soon to be jumping the gun and starting the casting already since there is a very real possibilty the Billy they cast now will hit puberty. Then again they may be casting younger boys hoping they can groom them specifically for the role over the year.

Hmm two sit down productions simulatneously is going to create a space crunch, however I doubt Wicked will stay over a year. While SF will bring new blood, the LA production satisfied most of the west coast demand. Also it's a bit soon to be thinking of a sit down for that show, it hasn't exactly won the Tony yet (not sure how long it took before Jersey Boys spawned its sit downs). If they did have to book while Wicked was still in, they'd probably give it the Curran given how close it is to
re: Andrew Lloyd Webber VIDEO GAME

Could it be like 'Left 4 Dead'? Killing off zombies, or in this case his shows?
re: Who did you see before they were famous??
 Jan 18 2009, 01:10:42 AM
Not entirely famous but Patina Miller in a few college productions and possibly Megan Hilty (it was a small student directed piece with a ditzy blonde type who was a sr. they same year Meg would have been).

Also she's not famous yet, but Tro Shaw who is playing Anybodys in WSS was in my Shakespeare class.

re: Idina Menzel concert broadcast tonight on PBS
 Jan 15 2009, 10:48:02 PM
I am very surprised that its not airing in SF until Sunday at midnight. Of all the city with a bunch of theater queens I'd assume SF would be on top of the list. On the plus side, in place of it tonight on KQED they have the Great Performances South Pacific @ Carnegie with Brian Stokes Mitchell.
re: Sardi's
 Jan 15 2009, 04:14:26 PM
Agreed with what most people say, get drinks and dessert. To me the food was appalling and the atmosphere was more touristy than theatery. Also the service left a little to be desired. As quaint as the theater drawings and memorabilia are, I'd just say go to 9th instead, a better meal and more enjoyable.
re: Any news on 'Ever After' and 'Somewhere In Time'?
 Jan 15 2009, 04:07:17 PM
Also, does anyone know what's going on with the Adam Guettel version of "Princess Bride?"

He has long since abandoned that to rights issues. Or at least thats what he said when asked about it last spring.

About Ever After, is the canceling definite b/c in the recent mailing SHN sent it still made it sound like it was a go. Seems like if it were canceled they would not bother saying it is still scheduled.

re: Rent, the straight play or a movie...

It would also be more dull than his first attempt at adapting it to celluloid.
re: Rent, the straight play or a movie...
 Jan 8 2009, 04:23:16 PM
Adam Chris, haha true dat!

I don't think Rent would translate as well since music is pretty integral to it with the bohemian vibe; it would just be depressing. Also, if you cut out the songs the actual material would be 45min.

Santa Fe would go something like this:

Mark: NYC sucks!

Angel: ditto.

Collins: Lets move to Santa Fe!

re: Espinosa Out as HAIR's Sheila?
 Jan 8 2009, 02:30:59 PM
I imagine Julie Reiber is anxiously waiting for a call from her agent right about now...

Also the problem with expecting actors like Eden and Groff to take pay at scale for the sake of theater is that they can get decent pay in Hollywood doing side parts. Art can't always trump money. Plus this is a jinxed production, I'm not surprised she doesn't want to attach herself to this. I hear Patina Miller dropped out too... Now there is no one left worth seeing in this for me.

re: Eden Espinosa joins cast of HAIR
 Jan 3 2009, 07:21:25 PM
So does that mean Eden will be taking pay at scale? I have to imagine that if they wouldn't pay out for Groff, they won't for her, even with the new reduced capitalization cost.

Also, anyone think she has a chance at the Tony as Shiela?

re: Matt Cavenaugh injured in WSS Tonight..
 Dec 27 2008, 08:45:45 PM
Just a caution to those wanting to see Matt Cavenaugh, they aren't doing refunds since he isn't billed above the title (I tried at the box office last night once we figured Matt C was out and they were waiting to get Matt H ready).
