BACK TO THE FUTURE Coming To Broadway?
 Feb 2 2012, 05:29:13 PM
"Oh my God," the American musical theatre canon was overheard saying, "they found me. I don't know how, but they found me."

Patti LuPone - 'I don't judge a part by its size...'

Can we not think of any other mitigating factors in Patti's decision?

Nothing about the film being a post-"Sunset Blvd." Lloyd Webber project? Nor of the considerable attachment Patti must have felt to the material and the role, and the potential discomfort inherent in being involved outside of said role? Neither still of her international, nearly-iconic association with said role, which was publicly underminded with each re-boot of the film project (this following the tumultuous-at

I want to say I read a feature story on the special sound tech specific to this scene from the tour's facebook page. I tried to locate it, but couldn't find it. Anyone else remember this?
June Havoc has died...

Coincidence/Karmic energy/Fate:

Yesterday was the day I cast a production of "Gypsy" I'm directing this summer. Dainty June ended up being the most problematic role to cast, with drop-outs/availability issues coming into play.

I actually heard this news from the actress who called to accept the role...She was doing a little research beforehand, and decided to take it "in memoriam" (said jokingly, of course).

This is the first large-scale production I'm helming...somet

New Orleans Broadway Season 2010-11
 Mar 17 2010, 01:28:42 AM
Definitely not as excited about the forthcoming season. 2 boring shows, 2 mediocre shows, 1 meh revival, and I may be mistaken, but didn't we JUST get "The Color Purple?"

I am, however, glad to hear that the "Avenue Q" tour is in good shape, and thrilled to hear that there's good rumblings for the Saenger's reopening season. It just doesn't feel right seeing tours anywhere else...

Ella Fitzgerald's "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered."

Truth be told, her rendition of "Mack the Knife" from her Berlin concert (in which she botches the lyrics and turns the number into a brilliant scat display) may be my favorite recorded piece of anything ever.

re: What Broadway performers deaths have surprised/saddened?

I certainly have to second Carl Anderson. I will always remember seeing his Judas, a role he spent a lifetime defining, in New Orleans' Saenger Theatre (which, while we're talking about losses to the theatrical community, is a true post-Katrina tragedy). Every second spent onstage (even when interacting with Sebastian Bach's Jesus) was sheer perfection, and I remember thinking how remarkable it was for a performer of his age to have such a youthful onstage exuberance. We lost him less than a

If you have to ask, it's probably receding.

re: Favorite 'I want' song in a musical

Damn, Spork beat me to "Much More!"
Also have to 2nd (or 89th, I lost count) "Somewhere That's Green" and "Out There" as some of the best.
And yes, Spork, "The Movie in My Mind" definitely counts.
I'll add:
"Is Anybody There" from 1776. (I know "Piddle, Twiddle..." is technically the "I Want" number in terms of placement, but this is basically the same idea with much more power!)
"Can't Be Bothered Now" and "Someone to Watch Over Me" from Crazy for You

re: favorite opening number

"Ragtime," Ragtime
"Prologue," Little Shop of Horrors
"God I Hope I Get It," A Chorus Line
"Try To Remember," The Fantasticks

And, though technically comprised of several individual numbers, the first 15 minutes of "On the Twentieth Century."

"Chicago," with a sublime, new-hipped Bebe as Roxie.

I also wonder how Carl Anderson was recently diagnosed with leukemia. Either the doctors or the reporter are off by a few years...

Evita
On the Twentieth Century
Fifty Million Frenchmen
My Fair Lady
Chess

Will this show also involve a man who looks like Catherine O'Hara?

Definitely second the Cole Porter suggestion. Although "The Tale of the Oyster" was originally written for a woman, I've seen it in various male compilation books and have used it to great effect!
