re: Footage of NIGHT MUSIC/CZJ singing Send in the Clowns
 Dec 10 2009, 04:09:49 PM
Wait until you see the show. They're acting for the stage and the camera is going to make it seem exaggerated.

I saw the show last Friday. It works and is about 80% there (as noted on other threads work is needed on accents, landing some humor, etc.). CZJ is mesmerizing and a delight especially with her moving SITC. Minimal orchestrations work with the minimal set. It's a winning production - simple and elegant that allows the characters and their stories to shine. I wish them success.

Evenin' Star sheet music (110 in the Shade)
 Jun 1 2009, 09:52:57 PM
So it seems the Act 2 opening song from the 2007 revival of 110 in the Shade, "Evenin' Star," was originally cut in Boston and added back in for the recent revival. Does anyone know a source for the sheet music for this song? I've searched and searched. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Amazing to see the many show billboards for the recently closed shows. That entire corner is going to look different - spamalot, grease, hairspray, YF...

The production went through changes here in DC; then was frozen. Laurents has time to still make changes in NYC with an entirely new preview period before opening. He probably made the changes he could in DC without blowing the budget and decided to put the $$ towards changes in NYC (new costumes please!)

Washington Post nailed it in their review: basically, it's uneven. Saw it last night...god, you can't deny how fantastic the score is. Hearing Bernstein's music sends chills (and more than once). And Robbins' choreography is beautiful.
The men just aren't that interesting (their dancing is fantastic) and the women out-act them and have far more developed characters (likewise fantastic dancing). Josephina has a voice from heaven and I liked her Maria. Matt's voice is stunning too and the ton

I love DC2NY. http://dc2ny.com/ Wireless included. Easy trip, good staff, bottle of water as you board, and safe drivers. Sometimes they stop at one rest stop for 15 min., other times they don't. usually the passengers vote. I've never had the trip take more than 4 hrs. 15 min. It's been flawless.

The official opening is next Wed. Jan. 7. Idon't know if it's an 8 p.m. curtain or earlier.

Anyone know if Laurents is still in DC working on this or leaving it to his assistants? (Would love to see him to have him sign my copy of his autobiography).

Hairspray - A Tracy from DC?
 Sep 12 2008, 02:37:02 PM
A few years ago, Mark Shaiman and Scott Whittman were at the Kennedy Center for a talk back/review of their careers. They also had worked with local theatre students earlier that day. One of the women impressed Mark so much he had her perform "Good Morning Baltimore." And she was FANTASTIC - Tracy to a "T." He mentioned he was going to have her audition for the tour. I've always wondered, did she ever get in the show?
Parade--My Marietta, GA Experience

Okay, as a theatre geek I sometimes get inspired by musical theater that is based on real people or historical events and want learn more or have some sort of experience.

I've sat in front of "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" at the Chicago Art Institute and listened to the entire OBC recording of "Sunday in the Park with George," focusing on each character in the painting...and moved to tears just like when I see the show.

When I saw "Parade" at Lincoln C

re: Grey Gardens Merchandise
 Jul 23 2007, 06:28:38 PM
I got a call back today from QuasiWorld. Well, my stuff didn't ship in May and of course they're out of it. I am getting my $$ refunded though. And as a consolation they're sending me a souvenir program and key chain. Not the stuff I ordered but not bad customer service...finally. The guy said since the closing was announced, distributors (i.e., eBay members) have been buying in huge quantities.

Did anyone else have crappy service/results with QuasiWorld when ordering Grey Gardens merchandise online? I ordered a baseball cap and Jerry Likes My Corn sleeveless shirt (as gifts no less). I never got the stuff, I left four voicemails and never heard back. They took my $43.60 but didn't send a thing and weren't responsive. I just want my stuff!

re: Hairspray Movie Review Thread

Nikki lights up the screen. Travolta? Too broad of characterization and his face is missing any character lines/expression at all. He just smiles with a stupid grin that never changes. Great songs, great cameos, a good time movie. Not really John Waters' style anymore that's for sure. (reading the review from NY Movies--noted above--there are some comments that I agree with. But go see it and enjoy the candy!

And yes, Amanda Green is a great lyricist.

On Sale--Songs for a New World
 Sep 11 2006, 02:24:23 PM
Tickets are on sale for JRB's Songs for a New World at Strathmore in Bethesda, MD (near Washington DC). Eric Schaeffer of Signature Theatre is directing. It's not until May '07 but I can't wait!

http://www.strathmore.org

"In 15 seasons under Artistic Director Eric Schaeffer, Signature Theatre has become a theatrical force of nature, working with such luminaries as Cameron Mackintosh, Stephen Sondheim, Terrence McNally, and John Kander and Fred Ebb, and producing Broadway-quality musicals that have drawn rave reviews, not just locally, but in The New York Times, Variety, and other harbingers of the theater world. In this unique collaboration, Signature brings the Washington premiere of Songs for a New World to Strathmore, the revue that launched the career of Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown and has since become the stuff of theater legend."

The book (and thus, I assume, the musical) makes references to 70s singer Leo Sayer, the 80s TV show Cheers and Elvis Costello's song "Alison" and the 90s film "Reservoir Dogs." The first relationship takes place in 1972 (Alison Ashworth) and the others continue on. The four songs I'm listening to sound very pop-80s.

I got it in the mail and gave the four songs a whirl...

Will Chase sounds fine; so does Jenn Colella. I'm not certain it's great material though (lyrics include "Losing you is like having a cold in the middle of summer" and the cliche "[my] heart is heavy as a stone"). Some of the lyrics are clearly meant to be tongue in cheek (e.g., during a love song ballad "...and in this light you don't look so bad"). Ugh.

But best of luck to the cast & crew in Boston this month.
