re: If they made these shows into movies...

INTO THE WOODS

I've thought about this for a while. I know it would never happen this way, but I would have almost all the cast be unknown actors under 25...this is the age range I'd place them all in:

Baker/Wife: Early 20s
Cinderella/Prince: Late teens/early 20s
Jack/Red: 15-17
Rapunzel/Prince: 15-18
Stepsisters: 18-20

with the rest of the roles being known actors, off the top of my head:

Witch: Anne Hathaway
Narrator/Mysterious Man: Jonat

I saw it about two weeks ago and agree with everyone else. I didnt get a chance to see the Broadway production, but I've memorized the soundtrack and have seen a fair amount of video clips scattered all over the internet so I went in with high expectations.

It was good, but something seemed off. Granted, the audience was dead for the most part so that definately took its toll on the overall experience. To utilize a metaphore (or a simile?) it was like photocopying a really nice photo- y

stratford production reflection for those who're curious:

there wern't many changes to the book or score that i remember, there was one part during 'a very nice prince' where cinderella and the baker's wife went into a bit more of a duet to the tune of 'agony'. I went to see it with the cast of my school's production of ITW so we managed to get a q&a session afterwards and i think the director said that sondheim approved the change but didn't write it. but dont quote me on that.

I wasn't really a fan of Stratford's production. From a design standpoint it was awsome and had some really innovative moments (the wolf costume, grandma's house, rapunzel's tower, bird gloves) but aside from Kyle Bair and Amy Walsh I didn't find much of the cast memorable. The 1920s approach was cool but I was a bit taken aback when the witch became a pilot for the finale, and the white mosquito hats the ghosts wore didn't work for me. I also couldn't see the justification behind them existing
re: Burton to direct Into the Woods with Depp as baker
 Dec 29 2007, 03:49:25 AM
well Burton loves his movies to have creepy fantasy trees so that alone makes it fitting. In regard to casting, i personally think the baker & wife should be unknowns in their early 20s....but thats my own interpertation of those two that not many people seem to agree with. I'd put Depp in as the narrator/mysterious man, Helena would be interstng as jack's mom. but she'd probably get cast as the witch.

Erica Peck who got Scaramouche in the Toronto production of We Will Rock You. She went to an open audition and was hand picked by Queen to play the lead. I think she's the youngest cast member, she was in the middle of studying musical theatre at sheridan college when she got the part.

thanks ChristiElphaJoSally :)

i'd also like to see Beauty and the Beast done in live action, i think it would be cool espically since in the musical they talk about how overtime the servents become more object-like. So at the beginning they could all look more like people, maybe even be people sized and progressively throughout the movie they look less like people and more like objects. Like they go from their broadway look to their animated counterparts. It would have potential to be v

i said this a while ago and it was pointed out that legalities would stop it from happening, but I think it would be really cool if Wicked was done to visually mimic the 1939 Wizard of Oz in respect to the sets, costumes, even film stock if possible. Like, if it looked as though you were watching 'The Wizard of Oz', they could even intergrate footage from the original film in there to really play up the "looking at it a different way" aspect.

re: Can Maria (Sound of Music) be black?
 Apr 24 2007, 02:22:10 AM
This is a really intersting discussion, I just thought I'd throw in my two cents about it. Politics of colorblind casting aside (for the record my view on the issue is that it works for some shows and not others) I think a black Maria would work well, in some ways it could put an intersting spin on everything. They don't go much in detail about Maria's past and she starts off the show as a nun. I don't know much about the exact workings of nunneries but I'm assuming they'd welcome anyone to join

"For those of you who think the rollerskating idea is horrible (which is most of you--myself included), how do you think they should create the underwater effect?"

I think they should use a bunch of different techniques depending on the moment. For example, in the first scene at the concert some of the key characters could do the air-suspension thing (ie- Triton, the sisters etc...) while the ensamble is rollar-skating around on the ground to watch the show. Ariel could make her entranc
