Raise your eyebrows all you would like. Why would using the word "disgusting" make me racist? lol The word fits the situation. Two superstars taking away the song of a 21 year old girl on the biggest night of her life... the night she WON the Tony. That is disgusting.

I'm not getting into the fray of accusations. I just find it odd to have a musical performance described in such a way. Unnecessary, maybe. Over

Sara sang a TINY bit of the song and Jesse finished it and Carole King only came in at the end to sing a short DUET with Jesse. So yes, it was disgusting what Alicia Keyes did.

As for your comment calling me a racist.... Pathetic. Sad. Troublesome. Wrong. Childish. and RACIST You ha

Tony Award Viewership Decline Over the Years

Broadway is the smallest and most niche of the major award sectors and the people who watch the Tony Awards care about the Tony Awards. Most theatergoers (or even fans of awards shows) aren't invested in seeing who wins best lighting or costume design when they may have only seen/heard of one or two of the nominees. My suggestion is to make the show a true celebration of live theater with musical numbers and dramatic performances broadcast from their original Broadway stages. If

"I think there should be a rule that only members of the cast can appear in any musical performance for the nominated shows. It's very misleading. And let's face it, Keyes' and Jay-Z's fanbases weren't ever going to be tuning in to the Tonys."

I am a fan of theater, the Tonys, musicals, and music. Right now Alicia Keyes represents all four. Your comment regarding fan bases is insensitive on many, many levels.

Alicia Keyes STOLE the song from Maleah. Maleah WON THE TONY. And the composer stepped in and took her best number. So we never got to hear the young lady who WON the award because the composer decided it was best she sing it. That was AWFUL. That was a disgrace imho.

I think you need to understand what this performance was about. I

The Tony Awards used to feel special, like Great Performances or Live From Lincoln Center. This is like watching Glee.

The best way to honor Chita Rivera might have been to simply show a clip of her performing.

Whoever made the decision to film the music numbers so close should be punished. Cabaret was weak.

I agree. This was the only performance that had a sense of theater. The rest were variety show segments.

The filming of the music numbers completely loses the scope and scale of being on stage. Too many intrusive camera close-ups and zooms. I'm disappointed.

Race, racism, colorism. If some of the commenters here were part of a pre-announcement viability focus group, Audra in Gypsy would never happen. The speculations about the direction this production might take raise a few interesting possibilities, but I say scrap all that and open the musical with a giant mirror,  a la Cabaret.

Thanks for the review. I've only seen a few theater 'concerts' and they all live or die by how well the performer reads the room and engages the audience. Short of Judy Garland clawing her way on stage for a duet, it seems the reopening of The Majestic won't be fondly remembered.

Audra McDonald-led GYPSY for 2024-2025 Season?

I first saw Gypsy with Tyne Daly and later in the run with Linda Lavin. As much as I enjoyed the production and Tyne's performance I have never wanted to see Gypsy again. The subsequent cast recordings had their merits and satisfied what interest I had in the vocals and orchestrations.

Audra doesn't interest me in this role (nor did Bernadette) but George C. Wolfe is the creative that I'm genuinely excited about. Depending on his interpretation I may finally be ready t

Has anyone actually seen the concert? I'm curious how he engages the audience and if his banter between songs comes across as relaxed and natural or more scripted and rehearsed. As a talented and two-time Tony Award winning theater actor, he ticks all the boxes that most people want from Broadway performers. It's a shame that his offscreen persona overshadows this.

I love a good vibrato but that was Sean Hayes Promises Promises level. Too much and it gives concern for his technique.
