Here We Are

There’s definitely going to be a cast album. Denis O’Hare said it bluntly at the stage door, totally unsolicited, on 10/27. I told him how much I enjoyed the show and his performance and he said, “We’re going to record it.”

I’m inclined to agree with one caveat: this is a show that a group of actors in a university or community theatre could make an absolute meal out of. The Frogs not so much. I could see this o

I certainly acknowledge a historical delineation has existed, but for me the investment in the production (cast, staging, orchestra size, et al) matters more than where it is staged when I consider the appropriateness of the ticket price.

This! The production presented is as lavish as any

I recorded the show on Thursday night and listened to the music several times yesterday. It's really quite complicated! Someone here earlier discussed the focused and light nature that signifies most late Sondheim, and I'd say that's accurate. The material also ha

FWIW, I didn’t think the show felt incomplete. IE, the music didn’t feel missing even though, of course, I would always want more Sondheim. I think this was a great, truly surreal show and even if it may not have been what was intended at the outset I think the destination makes a case for itself. It helps that the performances and physical production are roundly sterling.

Whatever they were calling it in 2016, which is the earliest referenced reading I’m finding right now although I believe it was being performed in readings/workshops as far back as 2015.

Considering there were 4-5 readings of this show over the last seven years of Sondheim’s life I find it very hard to believe there are only six completed songs. I understand this show was unfinished but this doesn’t ring true.

The last thing I wanted after watching this was a drink. It would be a weird move to serve a themed cocktail (like a Brandy Alexander) during this show.

They DID serve a themed cocktail at Atlantic!

Sadly yes. I was really hoping that’s where Cabaret would land so that it could get gutted but alas… Grey House was a placeholder for this.

It just feels like such a betrayal for the artistic vision of that production to be staged in such a huge venue.

The only possibility I could see is that they were intending to use it as a big open space and build their own theatre inside of it, which seems so much more complicated and expensive than just using a smaller theatre.

Not necessarily true. Some musicals that started in London and transfer to Broadway do cast recordings for both shows. Ex. Cats, Les Miz, EVITA, Chess, etc. It just depends on what they do. Don’t just automatically assume t
