re: The Beautiful Game reworked as The Boys In The Photograph

I live in Manitoba and I'm quite looking forward to seeing the premiere of this show at Manitoba Theatre Centre! Exciting. And random. Manitoba - what the F?
Question About Obtaining Adaptation Rights...
 Jul 13 2008, 04:38:47 PM
As an aspiring composer, I am wondering if anyone could tell me how to conduct a search to see whether or not a literary work is in the public domain?

Any information would be much appreciated.

"That's part of the fun of collecting something you care about."

I couldn't have said it better myself. You're a wealth of knowledge, frontrowcentre2!

I'll let you guys know what I think when I receive my shipment from amazon.com!

That's all I'm saying, husk_charmer.

I have definitely gone to the library and uploaded cast recordings to my iPod. That's a good perusal method....

However, I want to support this industry, speaking both as a fan and as a composer.

Bottom line - a good cast recording is like a little piece of history. Buy it!

Thanks everyone! Here is what I ended up purchasing:

Candide - OBC
Porgy and Bess - Houston Grand Opera
Threepenny Opera - OBC (But I'll consider getting the Donmar in the future!)
Pacific Overtures - Both the OBC and the Revival! I couldn't decide.

I hope you all approve!

P.S. These are the other recordings I purchased:

Wild Party (LaChiusa)
Anyone Can Whistle (OBC)
Dessa Rose (OOBC)
Evita (Studio Recording)
South Pacific (New Broa

I am doing a mass order from Amazon.com today and I would like your input....

CANDIDE (OBC, 1974 Revival, 1997 Revival?) I am not familiar with this show at all. My criteria is this: most complete recording with the best performances.

CABARET (I have many recordings of this show. Is the new London recording worth purchasing?)

PACIFIC OVERTURES (I know the score, but I do not own a recording of this show. OBC or Revival? Or both? I will consider getting both.)

I couldn't agree more! I think it may be one of Kander/Ebb's most beautiful songs.

On the other hand, I find it doesn't work in the context of the show. Just my opinion.

Does anyone else think it would make more sense if the Emcee sang it? This song is about evading reality. Emcee anyone?

re: Patti did some LuPwning of her own tonight

Patti LuPone, I adore you.

Having said that....

She needs to chill out a little. People break rules all the time. That does not mean it is right; but it happens nonetheless. Patti is extremely sensitive to this issue (good on ya, Patti) but she seems to be taking unnecessary measures (peering out of curtains, refusing to return to the stage...) She is allowing it to interfere with her craft.

re: Best Schools to Pursue Musical Theatre Writing?

Thanks everyone. This advice is invaluable to me. I will be getting a BMUS in composition; but I am equally interested in pursuing English/drama/history. It is all worthwhile education. Cross your fingers for me - hopefully I'll have a show on the great white way sometime in the not so distant future.

Michigan sounds great. Can anyone offer any information about Steinhart at NYU?

NYC_or_Bust, that was so uncalled for.....

Everyone else, thanks for your input.
I agree with what you are saying. However, I hope you can understand why I would want to select a school that offers training in the specific field I am interested in. A general music composition, though very valuable to me, is quite broad. I am confident enough to write musical theatre with my own skillset, but isn't it valid to want to get as much education as possible in the area of one's interest? <

Best Schools to Pursue Musical Theatre Writing?

Hi BWW'ers,

Since childhood I have wanted to write musical theatre. At this point, I am considering my post-secondary options. I am hoping you can give me some advice or point me in the right direction.

I would like to do a bachelor's degree in music composition; and, ultimately, earn a master's degree at Tisch's Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program (NYU).

In the meantime, my question is this: which institutions allow undergraduate students to specialize in musica

Or, no, wait - Merrily We Roll Along has a great one.
Ugh, picking favorites is futile when it comes to Sondheim!

What about best Sondheim overture?
My vote goes to A Little Night Music or Follies.

Move On - Sunday In The Park With George - the last chorus where George and Dot sing in harmony

The Bells Of St. Sebastian - Nine - the entire song, but especially "... and the muuuuuuusic of the ringing, was a different world that opened through our singing...." etc

Anybody familiar? How great is that song?

My Trip To NYC - Show Reviews! (May 3 - 10)
 May 11 2007, 01:05:55 AM
Hi everyone,
I have just arrived home from a wonderful, week-long trip to NYC. I saw some amazing shows, ate some fantastic food, and had the time of my life. What a city! I hope to be living there within the next couple of years, but in the meantime my parents and I visit annually. I soaked in a lot of theatre (Les Miserables, Deuce, Grey Gardens, Company, Spring Awakening, 110 In The Shade, and Curtains) and I am glad to share my reviews!

Lizzie, this probably isn't my place to say anything, but you are really out of line. This board should not be a place to attack people, but rather to help people and share information. Do you agree? I don't think the creator of this thread was being indolent by asking for our help, having already brainstormed on her own. Here are my suggestions:
